فيfor أهْيَفِslender القدِّstature لَدْنِهْsupple in his stature

I have cast off my honor and my faith
I shed my honor and religion
for one of slender, supple stature.
In the wastes of time near him
يَسْطوhe strikes بسيفِwith the sword of المنونِdeath
ماnot جَفْنُهُhis eyelid غيرُother than جَفْنِهْits sheath
He strikes with the sword of death;
Death wields the sword of demise
his eyelid is nothing but its sheath.
None but he can stay its blade

O cruelty of love, soften,
O cruelty of love, be gentle
even if only through the pomegranates of his bough.
Though but with the boughs of pomegranates

تُرْجَىto be hoped for لدنياًfor worldly life ولاnor دينْfaith
No remnant of me is left
Naught of me remains
to hold any promise for worldly life or faith.
That hopes for world or faith
للمحبينfor lovers
Love is nothing but death.
Love is but perdition
Ah, pity for lovers!
Have mercy upon lovers

My lord, enough for me—and for you!
My Lord, you suffice me
I have melted with longing for you.
I pine, longing for you

وبُرْؤُهْand his recovery فيin يَدَيْكْyour hands
How long must your lover waste away,
Until your lover wastes away
when his recovery lies in your hands?
And relief lies in your hands

For God's sake, for God's sake, take pity on me!
God, God, have mercy
I fled in the battle of Siffin.
I fled the battle of Siffin

How many a hope rests in you,
How much in you my wishes rested
with death now bound to it!
Yet fate them overtook

ياO قاتِليmy killer بِجَفَائِهْwith his coldness
May God judge between me and you,
God, between me and you
O you who kill me with your coldness!
O my killer, by your disdain
حَمَّلتَyou burdened قلبيَmy heart بينكyour parting
ولاand no دواءَremedy لدائهfor its illness
You burdened my heart with your parting,
You burdened my heart between us
and there is no remedy for its illness.
And no cure exists for its pain

والموتُand death دونَin the way of قضائهits repayment
Can the lovesick lover claim the debt you owe,
Can passion claim your faith
while death bars its repayment?
And death, without its decree?

لولاكَbut for you لمdid not تدرِknow ماwhat الهُونْhumiliation
Deal gently with a proud soul,
Gently, with a soul unwilling
which, but for you, would not have known humiliation.
Without you, it knows no humiliation

It calls you, aware
as Dhu al-Nun called upon God.
As Thul Nun called on God
لاnot أكتمُI conceal الحبَّlove بَعْدُany longer

I shall no longer conceal love;
No more I hide this love
I can no longer bear concealing it.
I'm weary with concealing it

May the one I love show me no pity,
I've no comfort loving one
if I do not declare his name.
If I proclaim not his name

Say to the watcher, I will sing
in the face of his rebuff or against his will.
Whether he scowls or rages

When you enter the vaulted chamber,
When sorrow comes
turn toward its wide-eyed houris,
Seek the tender gazelles there
