    Pass cups around for us,

Through which love's anguish is forgotten,

And keep company with fellow drinkers,

    As the covenant decrees.

Profess love as your sacred law

As long as you live, my friend,

    And keep your hearing pure

    From the reproacher's words.

For the rule is that there should hasten

    To you with wine

    ونُقْلُكَ الوردُ

    Jujube-red fingertips;

    And roses are your relish,

    Clustered around two myrtle sidelocks

    That the cheek curls.

    God, what days they were,

    When wine went round:

    Union and fleeting visits,

    And radiant faces,

    And the garden beaming,

    While the rain had wept,

    And we among loved ones,

A necklace having drawn us together.

    So, O Abu al-Abbas,

May good fortune never betray you!

    فينا أبو بكرِ

    Your deputy

    Among us is Abu Bakr;

He has acted for us on your behalf

    In prohibition and command.

    He left me no hardship

    From time's misfortunes.

    ما شَيَّدَ المجدُ

    For you are masters

    Of all that glory has built;

And if we put people to the test,

    They prove your opposites.

The world has put on jewels

    After being unadorned,

And Yahya has come to us

    Among the noble lords,

    White-blazed with lofty distinction,

    Above white-stockinged limbs.

    He struts in robes

    Whose embroidery is praise,

    And friendliness has overflowed,

    So it has no bounds.

    While I was drinking

    Pure, unmixed wine,

And among us was a penitent—

    But teetering on the edge—

A companion then said to me,

    From wit's racecourse:

    “Our drinking companion has repented.

    Sing to him and chant,

    لعلَّ يرتدُّ

    And offer him the cup;

    Perhaps he will relapse.”
