After your departure, sleep is forbidden to me.

Who can sleep while his heart is aflame?

The water of life, now you have gone afar, is stagnant

Spittle; and time's face is coal-black and dark.

Patience departed from me when you departed.

So longing roams the highlands and lowlands of my heart.

You made my tears flow as blood at parting from you,

Unjustly, and said, "Why does he not conceal it?"

How well I once kept my secret, before

The tears dripped as though they were crimson dye.

Whenever I attend a gathering and am revisited by

The memory of you, my tears overflow and stream.

By your claim upon me, who could behold my tears

Pouring down without saying, "This man is love-stricken"?

You made me bear the burden of parting from you; did you not

See that I could not bear it, and take pity?

You punished me in love for your own sins.

You could indeed do so, since you had the power—know that.

Do you complain of injustice while doing wrong with all your might?

And among wonders is a wrongdoer complaining of wrong.

    وعصيتم ووصلتم فهجرتم

    You were appeased, yet found fault, and were obeyed;

Yet you disobeyed; you were shown affection, yet turned away.

I had, in leaving you—or in being

Strong enough to bear it—a ladder to safety.

    فغضبت فافعلوا ما شئتم

    And you knew full well that I had sought it;

Then you grew angry—so do whatever you wish.

You are my heart's desire, whether you keep faith or betray.

And yours is my love, whether you draw near or depart.

Oh, how dear is Umm al-Wafa, even if she grows cold

And changes, for she never grows wearisome.

She alone has claimed my whole heart,

Though for so long it had been divided.
