O delight of living, I am too occupied for you.

Neither my she-camel nor my camel has anything to do with you.

Enough for me: I have forsaken you for fluttering banners.

Death beneath their shade is sweeter than honey.

On every field with blazing, blackened depths,

you see Death forestalling the appointed end.

Every swift-running mare carries my saddle toward it,

as though her forehead blaze were at Saturn's height.

She has been accustomed to wade through water calmly,

with a beautiful maiden's swaying gait among jewels and robes.

The horses, in disorder, race against their reins,

swimming in blood or climbing the heights.

War feeds the sword's blade every warrior

who feeds his sword only a champion's head.

There, ask about me; were it not that this would affront

some people, I would say: witness the battle; do not ask.

And many a far-flung waste, between whose bounds lies cramped

the whole expanse of space—describe it briefly or at length.

No raincloud forms there, for fear of a midday heat

that sucks away all moisture from its reaches.

The wind turns back from even its nearest destinations,

exhausted, showing the slackness of lassitude.

We leave Death hungry there at nightfall; even if she won

a morsel, she could not swallow it for fear.

Ask it about me; by my life, if you stand firm before it,

it will surely tell you of a momentous marvel:

one resourceful of heart, who cuts through every calamity

with a resolve that blocks the path of the pouring raincloud.

Whenever my soul rises toward a hope,

must some obstacle always bar it from that hope?

My offense against Time is my forbearance toward its crimes.

Woe to it! I am neither feeble nor dependent on others.

I will surely advance, even into the folds of a calamity

so terrible that it enveloped no man before me.

    إنّ المآثر لا يُحْرَزْن بالحيل

    Only one who shoulders it attains glory;

great deeds are not won by stratagems.

Who will carry a message from me to the young men?

I speak neither falsely nor foolishly:

I have forsaken Ibn Manzur: his water-seeker has

the mirage's gleam, and his caller is the mountain's daughter—the echo.

I will not bow, at sight of him, before an idol,

nor pause at a ruined trace of his abode.

Nor will I seek refuge with him, so full of vainglory,

beguıling glory between cowardice and miserliness.

    وها أنا وأياديهِ الجزيلةُ لي

    Here are the poems, and al-Hawzani's name belongs to them;

here am I, and his abundant favors are mine.

Between me and the heights, his mention brings [a fragrance?],

like a breeze through the dew-fresh garden.

To you his caller speaks in unambiguous words

concerning hopes, with a meaning free of confusion.

Bring me accounts of him; perhaps they bring relief

where cool water brings none to burning thirst.

My wish is a gathering with him, by which I may vex

some people, even if I came walking on spearpoints.

So kiss his fingertips on behalf of my mind and mouth,

and thank him for me, and for his kindness toward me.

Who can bring him to me—a sea with honey-sweet watering places—

now that I sit beside shallows and scant water?

Where, apart from him, can I find a sun that never sets,

or, if you wish, a shade that never shifts?

And a speaker neither meager in words nor foolish,

and a doer who neither flaunts his favors nor grows fretful,

and a protector whose refugee need not fear

    Death baring its crooked fangs.

    لو طاولتها مَرَاقي الشُّهْبِ لم تَطُل

    Every watchtower falls short of his eminence;

were the stars' ascending paths to rival it, they would not reach so high.

My poetry falls short of what you do,

though it surpasses the ages and dynasties.

And many a man of soaring fame, yet only a tale

of falsehood, in which every pretender wallows,

distracted by suspicions, as though the earth pursued him

for his offenses upon it—such is his obscure dread.

I put your glory in my poems, and he lay before them

like plunder at the tips of slender spears,

out of envy of you: its fatal stroke will not miss him,

even if the days bring it upon him slowly.

    السيدُ الرأيِ لا يؤتْى مِنَ الزلل

    Deliberately I left all other people for you;

a master of judgment cannot be undone by error.

The one most worthy of my poems, though they find no market,

is he who is worthiest in word and deed.

    لمثلها أسْرَفَ العُذَّالُ في عَذَلي

    I have experienced from my time what holds a lesson for me;

for the like of it, my reproachers have reproached me without measure.

I do not deceive people about myself; I have tested them.

O Time, flee! O swift death, take me!

Will time pass without my hand finding a brother

of whom, if I heard ill, I would believe none of it?

A trustworthy brother is an excellent portion of this world,

unchanging when anything in the days should change.

Truly I say: you have raised my aspirations,

and they have borne me through the heights as a proverb travels.

Until they made me imagine that the stars were among

my jewels, and the turns of Time among my servants.

    وَحُدَّ للقَدَرِ المقدُورِ يَمْتَثِل

    Command the nights: they will act without flagging;

set bounds for ordained destiny: it will obey.

    كلاهما بالذي تَرْضَى عُلاك كِلِ

    Draw fully on Abu Hafs's valor and bounty;

charge both with what your lofty rank approves.

A scion through whom you rise in every noble deed,

an offspring—what proud summit of honor has he not attained?

And a keen sword: every rising luminary wishes

in the heavens to be hung upon it as an ornament.

If the days swerve awry, he sets them straight

with a veteran's resolve and the keenness of one who seizes his chance.

    حمصُ الزمانُ وأنت الشمسُ في الحمل

    Birds sing my verse after their wordlessness;

Hims, the age [text unclear]—and you are the sun in Aries.

I praise you; enough for me that this is a bond

firmly joined between me and the heights of honor.

How often has it galloped with me toward every lofty goal,

though it goes forth shackled to deprivation.

Ah, pity me—a sword, if only you would strike with it—

keen-edged, but with worn scabbard and trappings.

From the bounty of your hands, the feast aspires to

a feast embracing all people and all days.

So rejoice in a feast of unique distinction [wording uncertain], when

others rejoice only in slaughtering sheep and camels.

May it never cease, beneath your shelter, to reach toward

embracing all the companionship and gladness it desires.

And may no calamity from the days strike me,

until my heart imagines itself empty of love for you.
