مُطَالَعةًa missive كادتalmost تَنوبُstands in عنfor القربnearness
To you, Abu ʿAbd al-Ilāh, despite the distance,
a missive that nearly took the place of nearness,
وطيبَand the fragrance of سَلامٍa greeting ودَّتِwished الرَّوْضُthe gardens أنَّهُthat it

and a fragrant greeting the gardens wished
were their own scent, with all their water and grass.

I sent a phantom of fancy bearing it, but it could not
pass among the hills, with waves like hills.

And suppose it pressed ahead, its resolve undeterred
by green wave-crests warded off with gray-white peaks,

or deserts like days of estrangement: you see the morning light
pale there, from neither illness nor love.

Then where could it find a night whose whole span would suffice
for its lofty quest and arduous passage?

And suppose it drew near until it saw you, and there parted
to reveal you to it, the days of distance and calamity's gloom—

then how could it convey what it bore, without
a tongue, and grasp what you say without a mind?

O my lord, a plea: since I resolved upon it, I have never ceased
contending over it with the most auspicious of the shining stars.

Perhaps the latter part of a complaint has already grieved you;
at its beginning I exhausted my sobbing—or my life.

With it I raised a voice that, whenever I wished, would burn away
with its anguish all that poured from my streaming tears.

And between the Commander of the Faithful and that voice
lie the chamberlains' obstruction, or the awe of the veils.

And you, long ago, were the first to feather
my renown, until it flew through East and West.

And who will give me another like it, with which I may confront
the reversals of the nights, while it enjoys safe passage?

Perhaps I may strike a mighty blow at Time
with a bared blade that releases and takes captive.
