    لي أوْلَه في نوميَ الممنوع

    Ask my freely shed tears whether there is any remedy

    for me or for them concerning the sleep denied me;

    and ask my ceaseless longing how

    its doubts have assailed my severed hope.

    Do not put your trust in time and its vicissitudes:

    time has slain the secure and the terrified.

    ما أشْبَهَ التسليمَ بالتوديع

    Leave loved ones, and nearness or separation;

    how like a farewell is a greeting!

    O laggard who grieves over what has passed him by,

    indolence is a form of waste.

    And O dissembler, who took deceit as a shield,

    did you not resent your judgment being deceived?

    Resist with your resolve or your utmost effort: they are

    the firm determinations of a decree that cannot be repelled.

    And look with your eye or your heart: do you see

    anything but one struck down, or the fate of one struck down?

    O sons of ʿUbayd Allāh, where do your nobles stand

    compared with one stumbling over his cast-off rein?

    An age whose vicissitudes seem to have been gathered

    from scattering what was strung together and dispersing what was united.

    May al-Baqīʿ be gladdened—would that it had not been—

    by a grave that has become an honor to every burial ground.

    How wondrous it is! It held noble virtues and high honor,

    yet those who prayed for it prayed that it be widened.

    وإذا استَمَرَّ فلاتَ حينَ رجوع

    And turn to consolation, for every ill passes;

    and if it persists, then there is no time for return.

    And if some event makes you marvel at time,

    then marvel at a follower weeping for one he follows.

    And if you consider life, it is a grievance,

    and death is where the ruling on it is inscribed.
