O you, my love for whom I concealed,

    Until passion harmed me.

The reproacher kept up his reproaches,

And reproach pains the lovesick lover.

Why did you not honor his bond—

When love's least demand is a bond of honor—

And repay him with his [unclear term]?

    And blame remains,

    Apart from

    His desire, contemptible.

I would not have dreaded thirst,

If tears could quench my thirst.

    Your mouth suffices me whenever

The withholding one frustrates my efforts to reach it.

Tormented by the midday heat of thirst,

    You have forbidden circling,

    And it is my habit

    To circle round.

A bough that now [fills?] the robes,

    Youth's intoxication makes him sway.

I gave him what he does not want,

Of love for him, while he is miserly.

    I kept bowing to rejection,

    Until obscurity surrounded me.

So whenever I attain union with you,

Then, on that day, I shall become

    A leader in this world.

How long will separation tear me apart,

    In longing for Umm al-Ala?

The burden of passion has left me nothing

    But remnants of lingering life.

I weep for you as long as weeping wills,

And it befits me to weep.

For even if you have denied

My eye the sweetness of sleep,

Still, I have indeed known bliss

    In you, long ago.

I burdened my soul with its own doom,

Though I jealously cherish its dwelling-place,

For one in whose gaze appears

    Either coquetry or wantonness.

She spent the night accusing her dream-phantom of betrayal,

And I, by your honor, do not betray.

    The pledges pass away,

And come to nothing, O people,

    And I stand by

    My pledge, steadfast.
