The nearer of your two goals is their security,

And both your palms are right hands in their service.

Time summoned you as a leader of justice,

And fierce war answered its call through you:

A keen sword that Time never unsheathed except

To distinguish those who keep faith from those who betray.

And keen of edge, its substance is death.

Ask it: with it lies the certain news.

When you speak of him amid battle,

The story of him there has many strands.

Toward the king of kings, my heart was swept away,

Though eyes had wearied of their own pupils,

By a love that, had anything but his remembrance bestowed it,

I would have called intoxication or madness.

Toward a king accustomed to extending a hand

That, through its Creator, gives aid and seeks aid.

Unbowed and daring when he approaches them,

Strong and trustworthy when he tends them.

And a grinding mill whirled with deaths.

Spears encircled him, making it hard

For me to tell: was it a halo or a lion's den?

He surveyed the inner secret of every unseen thing,

With a mind untouched by conjectures.

So water cannot lie still in the earth,

Nor can fire lie hidden in a stone.

Kings looked eagerly, in love and dread,

    Toward a king who is obeyed and obeys none;

Toward one of beaming features, open-faced,

As though dawn's splendor were his brow.

Lavish with lands and all they contain,

Even though Time is stingy with them.

Through him, riding camels and rhymes gain honor,

When among other folk they are held cheap.

O Abu Hasḍan, master of all beauty,

A call that neither strays nor lies.

The nights have stirred with your bounties,

    As boughs sway with fruit.

    تَعَاطَتْهُ السُّهولةُ والحزون

    You passed across the earth a cup of fragrance;

Both smooth and rugged lands have partaken of it.

So every hollow is musk unsealed,

And every height a precious treasure.

Your army's vanguard is victory that favors you,

And your banner's shade is manifest conquest.

It has no roosts except in breasts.

You raised along the borders a beacon of justice,

Which shone while these days were dark.

If Time promises joy in anything,

It is under a vow or an oath imposed by you.

I yearn for you—ask about me, and ask me—

And longing is the furthest reach of everyone who yearns.

Between us lies many a spacious waste,

Whose daylight is like a sorrowful heart.

Their lofty backs seem like bellies.

When you let your gaze roam, you say: 'A sea!'

In which the gaze is humbled and subdued.

The mirage flashes, so you say: 'Water!'

And a lizard scurries through it, so you say: 'A fish!'

As though its hills, with the heat-haze leaping

Around them, were dancing waves or ships.

And another like it, save for shrouding veils,

As though one sitting in it were a buried corpse.

As though its pillars were dunes of sand,

Toward you, though it may have its troubles.

O heir to the throne, I have a covenant in loving you,

As though my praises were an oath born of it.

You met my needs and made my name renowned,

So the untamed grew docile, and the balking steed obeyed.

Wealth was pictured to me, so I spoke of it,

For I know it is among the things to come.
