لاno طارفٌnewly acquired wealth عنديin my possession ولاnor تَالدُinherited wealth
Praise be to God, and thanks to Him.
Praise be to God, and thanks to Him,
I have neither newly acquired wealth nor inherited wealth.
I have no joy nor newborn child,

فيin حالةٍa state يَرْثيfeels pity لهاfor it الحاسدthe envious one

If my fate turns against me, God is there for me,
And the hoped-for dew is eternal,
and Khalid is the one I look to for bounty.
O One whose bounties we all share,
ياO واحداًpeerless one أَفضالُهhis favors شِرْكَةٌshared in common
فيناamong us ولكنْand yet مجدُهُhis glory واحدunique
O peerless one, whose favors are shared
Yet glory is Yours alone,
among us, yet whose glory stands alone.
Around me chicks like grains of millet,
حوليَaround me أفراخٌchicks كَزُغْبِlike the downy young of القطاsandgrouse
ليليَmy night منْfrom همٍّworry بهمْfor them ساهدsleepless
Around me are chicks like the downy young of sandgrouse;
At night I stay awake worrying about them,
my night is sleepless with worry for them.

Many a fifty-year-old still has a father.
many a man of fifty has a father.
