ولم يَقْضِ من لذَّاتِهِ ما يُؤمّل
I have been told that death cuts a young man down,
I was told death seizes the young man,
before he has enjoyed the pleasures he hopes for.
Before he takes his full share of pleasures,
فإنso if كانis ماwhat نُبئتُI was told حقاًtrue فإنthen indeed ذاthis one

If what I was told is true, then this one
If what I was told is true, then he,
surely seizes his chance, and that one is surely heedless.
Is unwise, yes he is unmindful.

My two companions from Qays, rejoice: a decree has been passed
My friend Qays, rejoice, for the nights'
by the nights’ vicissitudes—a decree that cannot be changed.
Circumstances, with what cannot be changed, have passed.

إذا جاوزَ المرءُ الثلاثينَ حِجّةً

فقد جاوزَ العُمْرَ الذي هُوَ أفضل
When a man has passed thirty years,
When a man exceeds thirty years of age,
he has passed the best part of life.
He has exceeded the best years of life.

And if he reaches fifty, he stands on the brink;
If he reaches fifty, he is on the brink,
why, then, does he make excuses or seek consolation?
So why does he become senile or ill?

After eighty, confusion overcomes him,
speaks and acts under time’s rule.
He speaks of fate and acts accordingly.

And every life is followed by death,
Though all life ends in death,
while a man has hopes that stray and run straight.
Man has hopes that twist and turn.

Not everyone whom death forgets is [immortal?];
Not everyone forgetful of death is reckless,
but whoever does not die will be killed.
But he who does not die, will be killed.

And before a prudent man can be deceived by life,
The wise one, without being deceived by life,
death stands charged with counting souls.
Like a vigilant guard, counts the souls.
وماand not المالwealth إلاexcept ماwhat تعجلتyou took promptly نفعهits benefit

Wealth is only that whose benefit you take promptly,
Wealth is only what you enjoy hastily,
where the watcher, whose time is deferred, sees you.
So it is there when you need it later.

Some people are miserly with what they will leave behind;
Some are stingy with what they will leave behind,
do they not know that the nights are more miserly?
Do they not know the nights are more stingy?

When the span of a man’s life stretches long,
When a man's lifespan ends,
he is like the shadow among us: it ends and shifts.
He is but a shadow amongst us that fades and changes.

I have felt remorse; is there anything but remorse alone?
I regret - but what use is regret alone? -
By God, I do not know, and I am surely afraid.
By God I do not know, though I am old.

Is it not time for me to cast passion aside?
send it off yonder, and banish it?
And devote myself there to detachment?

You who ask where is youth and its pleasures,
then ask the days, if you would ask.
Ask the days if you want to know.

When you did not forbid, nor did I pay heed.

And O my slayer, no place remains for the sword to strike,
My killer, the sword no longer has a stroke,
nor authority for death, nor a tongue for me.
Nor does fate judge, nor do I speak.

But [an eager aspirant?] was summoned by lofty glory,
But an arrogant tribe assaulted us,
so he hastened to it, pouring forth or beaming with joy.
So he confronts them, to drink or be watered.

At a time when men concerned themselves with no course
At a time when no man gained glory
of glory without saying, ‘Wealth is better.’
Without saying money is best.

And where judgment was squandered and passion called to aid,
When opinion was lost and passion summoned,
and compromise was made over the course that was better;
When the matter needing honesty was corrupted.

In a crisis, from which the dawn is saved,

It goes down and the clouds are appealed to, but hold back.

The calamities rise up and are unleashed,
giving death drink upon drink from every soul.
To raise havoc in each soul and let loose.

The soul is only part of what a young man bears,
The soul is but some of what the young man carries,
but few, when burdened, will bear the load.
But few equal its load and carry it.

otherwise, why did they speak for it and make claims about it?
So why did they say it and pretend so?

Rather, they sought an ultimate goal of excellence,
But they sought the utmost in virtue,
and could not reach it without being generous.
And did not attain it without excelling.

That is Ibn Abd Allah, whom nothing weighs down
The son of Abdullah is he whom
when there is no escape from death’s engulfing flood.
The torrents of death do not alarm.

As both his hands stretch forth toward glory,
He stretched out both hands to the heights,
he charges and lays low, or bestows and gives lavishly.
He rages and casts down, or attains and uplifts.

بأَكثرَ مما امّلوا أو تأَمّلُوا
His bounty overflowed, and his light shone,
The long generosity of his sword overflowed,
beyond what they hoped for or contemplated.
Indeed, his heart is more generous, his right hand longer.

Looming over his enemies and bold against them,
The breadth of the arena of his spear's brandishing is vast,
like a gliding serpent, or a falcon swooping down;
Yet the grasp of death on what it takes is narrow.

The well-aimed arrow keeps to its path,
like a swaying branch, or a flowing stream.
Though destinies sprout up from what is hoped.

His sword-belt is long, his sword’s edge keen;
He is friendly, neither terrifying coward, nor frightening hero,
indeed, his heart is keener, and his right hand longer.
But in every heart, he is imprinted.

Supple in wielding the spear, wide in his range,
A day of abundance, spreading, well-prepared,
while death’s capacity is strained by what he makes it bear.
And a devout night, intensely dark.

And drawing his bow for the arrow’s flight, his goal lies near,
Trustworthy with what people have lost,
though the fates recoil from what he hopes for.
Loyal to what they severed in their haste.

Approachable, yet inviting no greed; [awe-inspiring?], yet frightening none,
Each day, his nobility has an exaltation,
but pictured in every heart.
By which days and nights are prolonged.

A day mantled and girded in blessings,
To you, their glory comes to an end,
and a night of piety, bright-browed and white-footed.
And by you, their affairs are rightly guided.

Faithful to what people squandered, joining
Take inspiration from Mus`ad and take
what they severed, hungry for what they took in haste.
An example, and look to the star risen high.

through which the days grow longer, or grow bountiful.
For the rule is not reversed, nor the matter complex.

Their honor reached its height in you, and found guidance through you;
The clouds of dew sufficed them in their loftiness,
what they entrusted is enough for you; take what they ruled.
To honor, however it inclines, it is lasting glory.

Listen to guidance from a helper, and take your wishes
And the entourage of pride, anticipate for them the heights,
in due order; gaze at the star from above.
In knowledge, they climb, or in wealth, they descend.

And tell them of Yusuf and Muhammad:
The lamp of nighttime, the sea of dew, the best guidance,
the judgment is not rejected, nor is the matter obscure.
Together, they are highest, rightest and longest.

Their two palms are clouds of bounty; they never aspired
When they strive for peace or stir up war,
to honor unless that honor was firmly rooted glory.
It is water and shade, or armor and swords.

And pride’s fringe—expect lofty rank for them,
The rhymes of poetry came to you, as for their taste,
rising through knowledge, or sinking through wealth.
It is honey, and their scattering, basil.

A lamp in darkness, a sea of bounty, the furthest reach of wisdom,
In reward for what you gave them and sufficed them,
together they are loftier, better guides, and farther-reaching.
When what was preserved is lost, and what arrived, gone.

If they incline toward peace or stir up battle,
Your generosity to the lofty is a custom and principle,
they are water and shade, or shield and blade.
And your might to the lowly, an outcome and haven.

And no hope except in you.

while what was safeguarded was lost, and what approached turned away.

and your might is a destination and refuge for this world.
