This age leads forth the virgin brides of high glory
and lowers a gaze charged with hope.

It looks toward you with a guilty man's gaze, hoping
for a past offense among its crimes to be forgotten.

And even if it dealt ill in days gone by,
let it surely improve its dealings henceforth.

These hopes—their thirst, wide in its reach,
after its burning, has now been quenched.

So let it surely revive effaced landmarks
and surely water the precinct of glory grown barren.

The heralds of high glory gleamed, and there spread
clouds of new honor, ready to pour down.

Indeed, I have seen Time in its deeds
hurrying, though you think it moves deliberately.

A man who makes the adversary his weapon is not
unarmed when misfortunes quarrel with him.

He restrains calamities with his valor and fierceness,
alone, though they have led a great host against him.

The enemies never found you complaining of calamity
until they saw a pillar of Yadhbul shaken.

And when the noble see you, you are farthest-reaching
in their glory's course, and most dazzling to behold.

And when the furnace blazes hot around them,
in a perplexity, they summon the most august, the best.

And when calamities' confines grow narrow,
you widen them with judgment and decisive speech.

Misfortunes never proved intractable without
your surpassing resolve striking one of their joints.

I complain to you of misfortunes, for they
have poured long, slender spears upon my throat.

You used to ward them off and repel their malice
from me when they unsheathed the blade against me.

So now they recoil from my blood if they level
toward me misfortunes' blood-stained spearhead.

Indeed, I have come to this: lamentation's stay
with me is like a bird's shadow as it flits.

The arrows of misfortune assail my vital parts,
blue, the last following the first.

each leaving a deep gash you would take for
a yawning mouth, or the eyes of one wide-eyed.

Indeed, calamities have swilled me in their mouth, yet found
no easy passage for me through their gullet.

They desisted from one seasoned and accustomed
to calamity casting its heavy breast upon him.

Steadfast of heart; yet if a lightning flash flicks its tongue
over your heights, he sways with his grief, restless.

And longing's fire takes hold in his entrails,
so he sees day's whiteness as darkest night.

So now misfortunes have ceased and relented,
and I have left their sword's edge chipped.

And I donned the robe of recovery after
expectations grew grim, and I became a burdened, wasted beast.

And after despair a blessing came to my rescue;
God graciously bestowed it through His kindness.

So perhaps the bonds of union will be gathered after
I have become entwined in separation's cloak.

And may a fire kindled among the ribs die down,
and grief that sank deep into the heart dry up.

you fell a spiteful foe and annihilate him,
and give to a supplicant and dispel a knotty difficulty.
