    لو شئتَ حكَّمْتَ فيهمْ كفَّ مُنتَصِرِ

    They said: You have endured harm from a band of men;

had you wished, you could have set an avenger’s hand over them.

Men assail you who, if you meant them harm,

would become prey between fang and claw.

You turn a blind eye until they say: Helplessness has forced him

into humiliation; you endure until no endurance remains.

How long will you bear with them without taking revenge,

when forbearance sometimes tends toward weakness?

Suppose they are water surging over a stone—

even water bores into solid stone.

I said: In my eyes, they and their scheming

are like a dog that spends the night howling at the moon’s face.

Indeed, my refined character has forbidden me

to abandon forbearance amid rancor and impatience.

Through gentleness I attain whatever goal I desire,

while the rash man is carried toward danger.

Poison gently works its deadly design,

as the wiles of spurge and aloes cannot.

Rancor is like fire in two fire-sticks: if they are left alone,

it lies dormant; if set to striking sparks, it blazes.

Sometimes two opposites unite and find a balance,

like water and fire in green wood.

Most people bring misery to those who keep their company,

and one who warms himself at a fire cannot escape its sparks.

They resemble one another in their evil natures,

despite their differing inclinations and appearances.

The spearhead pierces according to its strength

in thrusting, yet needle-pricks can reach farther still.

If those beneath me oppress me, it is no wonder:

such are the times—they hunt the falcon with a sparrow.

Blessed be God, just in His decree:

by His judgment, the leopard’s assault terrifies a gazelle.

So never seek fairness, for testimony has already been given

by the lion’s claws that injustice is innate.

A man may be denied help from his own kin,

even from hearing and sight when trouble befalls him,

yet be granted help by those who are not his kin,

as a bow’s strength is reinforced by its string.

Let no blossom, lovely to behold, deceive you

if it unfolds to yield bitter fruit.

The farthest goal may be reached at a leisurely pace

by one who takes his ease, while the swift may be stranded.

    وطالما رَضِيَ المكفوفُ بالعَوَرِ

    So be content with what time readily bestows;

often the blind man has been content to be one-eyed.

    وإنما تلفُ الأصدافِ بالدُّرَرِ

    A man’s excellence may sometimes be his ruin;

shells are destroyed only for their pearls.

A man reckons whatever good comes to him

to be his own doing, and ascribes his misdeeds to fate.

We weighed affairs, yet did not grasp their realities,

even after reflection; experience thus became like hearsay.

    فالغُصنُ يُحْطَبُ إن لم يعطِ بالثَّمرِ

    So let some good trickle from you, even if means elude you;

for a branch is cut for firewood if it bears no fruit.

Life is like water: it may run clear for its drinker

at times, and at others be drunk despite its murk.

We hovered over it; but when our time to drink came,

fear held us between approaching the water and turning away.
