Listen, O Yemeni riders: why do you

watch in al-Baṭḥāʾ for lightning from Yemen?

You seek to conceal your passion with all your effort,

but can a person conceal what is plain to see?

God refuses to let a passion remain hidden when behind it

are tears and sighs that rend the collarbones.

And O company that passed through Jarʿāʾ Mālik,

whose weary mounts and long-necked camels make for the sanctuary,

I adjure you by God: seek, I pray,

    in His name, a fragment of my heart that I have lost;

and say to a tribe encamped near it,

who settled there and forsook my companionship:

Be gentle; do not, by breaking with me, outrun

the nights' reversals; time itself brings enough.

Is it just that I have paid what I owe you,

while what you owe me remains just as it was?

Alas, how long shall I cherish one who neglects me,

and trust a betrayer, and remember one who forgets?

And my loved ones kept mistreating me

and shunning me until I excused my enemies.

And the best of my companions is one who leaves me unharmed,

and remains neutral, neither against me nor for me.

Have you not seen how long the tribe's whispered counsel lasted

over parting, and how they answered a herald of separation?

And they said, 'We have agreed to depart at daybreak.'

Oh, my anguish, if dawn finds the caravan setting out!

    معاذَ الهَوى أنْ تُصبِحَ اليومَ ساليا

    So, O heart, return to the anguish you have known;

Love forbid that you should find consolation today.

And O my lifeblood, melt; O my eye, keep vigil!

And O soul, let longing leave nothing of you.

And O my companion, reserved for secrets apart from them,

I shall give you my pure affection, openly and in confidence.

Whenever you see the herd ushering along a little gazelle,

slender-limbed, dark at the eye corners, gazing intently,

do not draw near that little gazelle, for it

eludes you when shot at, and strikes you dead when it shoots.

And tell my drinking companions, who expected

to meet me after today, that there will be no meeting.

So do not hope for a cure for what afflicts me, for it

is the disease that has baffled the physician who treats it.

And I have not forgotten a day in the sanctuary whose shade was pleasant,

and there we tasted life's sweetness, pure and clear.

    فهل بكمُ من لوعةِ الحُبِّ ما بيا

    I see a suspicious glance from you toward it;

do you feel the same burning anguish of love that I do?

And a night of union whose youth we donned,

until dawn turned its forelocks gray.

    فلما تصالحْنَا نسِينا الشكاويا

    We recounted our complaints of what we suffered from love;

then, when we made peace, we forgot the complaints.

And we spent the night, in defiance of the envious one, enfolded

together by the edges of her mantle and my cloak.

    فما بَرِحَتْ حتى شكرنا اللياليا

    And the wrongs done by the nights had been many;

yet it lingered until we thanked the nights.
