ألمْdid ... not? تَرَyou see أَنّthat جُنْدَthe army of الوردِroses وافَىit arrived
بصُفْرٍin yellow ones منamong مَطارفِهِits embroidered cloaks وحُمْرِand red ones
Have you not seen that the army of roses has arrived
In yellow and red embroidered cloaks?
أتَىit came مستلْئِماًclad in armor فيamid الشوكِthe thorns منهُof it
نِصالَblades of زُمُرَّدٍemerald وتِراسَand shields of تِبْرِunworked gold
It came clad in armor amid its thorns,
With blades of emerald and shields of gold.
فجلَّىso it dispelled بالسرورِwith joy هُمومَthe cares of قلبيmy heart
وطاردَand it chased away بالنشاطِwith vigor بناتِthe daughters of صدريmy breast
So with joy it dispelled my heart’s cares,
And with vigor drove away the daughters of my breast.
فماso what عذريmy excuse إِذاif أناI لمdo not أقابِلْrepay
أياديَهُits favors بشُكْرٍwith thanks أوor بسُكْرِwith intoxication
What excuse, then, have I if I do not repay
Its favors with thanks—or with intoxication?
