A woodland dove sang mournfully on a branch,

and rekindled the fire of my sorrows that had died down.

She lamented, though she had lost no mate nor been bereaved,

and reminded me of my longings and my homelands.

Free from sorrow's bonds, living at ease,

she now renews the anguish of the fettered captive.

    هيهاتَ ما نحنُ في الحالينِ سِيانِ

    She mimicked me in my anguish and my rapture;

far from it! We are not alike in either state.

There is no trace in her breast or on her eyelid

of my heart's fire or the water of my eyelids.

O mistress of the lush bān-tree, cradled

by a green tree, branch entwining with branch:

if your lament is meant to console an exile,

far from his family, afflicted with separation,

then answer me in kind whenever rapture returns to me:

anguish for anguish, and solace for solace.

Otherwise, desist until I seek help from one

who cares about my plight and heals the wound of my sorrows.

You are not of my kind, nor do you care what has been taken

from me by sorrows; nor do you know my plight.

Leave my consolation to the cloud, for it has

tears like my tears and wailing like my wailing.
