They frowned at the hair smiling on my head.

Nothing drives fair women away like white hairs among the locks.

She thought his youth would last, and did not know

that youth is a stairway to old age.

My resolve has not grown gray, nor my prudence nor my character,

nor my loyalty, my faith, or my generosity.

    وَالشَيبُ في الرأسِ دونَ الشيب في الشيمِ

    My head has merely exchanged its former hue for another;

grayness in the head is less grave than grayness in character.

My soul be ransom for her who said on the day we departed:

“Your love is in my keeping: go if you wish, or stay.”

“Do not reproach him: he has neither acted basely nor incurred blame.

    وَالشَيء في كل صافٍ غير مُكتتمِ

    When his heart grew clear, his secrets became transparent;

in anything clear, nothing stays concealed.”

Some separation brings reunion nearer; how often

have I joined one company to another that was apart.

How can I stay in a land where none fears

or hopes for the point of my spear or my pen?

She kissed me farewell, and I said to her:

“Stop: sipping wine is not among my ways.”

Had her saliva not been wine, she would not have spoken

with pearls strung from the bubbles of her mouth.

Had I been certain her mouth held something other than wine,

I would not have been one to fend off kisses with slaps.

Her saliva grew colder as it trickled

over the hailstone pebbles of her cool mouth.

I surely turn my gaze away from her beauties

out of nobility, and keep my hand from what lies within reach.

I entertain no intent, though my soul contends with me—

God forgive me—except in the hour of dreaming.

I do not deny the dream-vision its kindness, which revived remains

of ours, as souls revive mortal remains.

It greeted us and gave us life; its visit spared us

traversing the wastes on graceful, swift-paced mounts.

Union with the phantom and union with the maiden, if she withholds herself,

are alike—how closely possession resembles absence!

Time is like the dream-vision: its miseries and blessings

come without intent; neither praise nor blame it.

    فَلو أَردت دوام البؤس لَم يَدُمِ

    Do not thank time for adversity it removes;

even if you wanted misery to last, it would not.

Oppose your desire: were its mildest part not

sorrow, eagles would not be snared with vultures.

    وَهَل رأَيت شفاء جاء من سَقَمِ

    You hope for healing through her eyelids and their sickness;

have you ever seen healing come from illness?

And you lay claim to Najd's east wind; if it stirs,

it brings heartache to you alone, of all people.

How could Najd's east wind quench his longing,

when wind feeds every blazing fire?

I yearn and regain sobriety, yet no calamity has wounded

my honor, as reputations are wounded by words.

Nor do I like praise that is not borne out

by my deeds, nor accept doubtful claims to glory.

Do not deem ancestral distinction an honor

for one who falls short of the heights of their glory.

Men's beauty lies in their good deeds, and their pride

in their excellence in lofty endeavors, not in their stature.

    فَحاسِدي منعم في زيِّ مُنتَقِمِ

    No envier has backbitten me without adding to my honor;

my envier is a benefactor dressed as an avenger.

my record of noble deeds is headed with their names.

“O seal of literature, praise the seal of generosity!”

“This is the road to exaltation: go straight!”

yet many a king is debased and inspires no respect.

with spaced teeth, and sipped by every mouth.

If his fingertips left marks on mouths,

and the ground of his procession did, none would escape chipped teeth.

    فَالطَبعُ يَجذِبها بِالطَوعِ وَالرَغمِ

    It is as though your ground were a magnet for every mouth;

nature draws them to it, willingly or unwillingly.
