مَنيَّة كُلَّ صَبٍ مُستَهامِ
They brought, on the morning the tents were struck,
The day after striking camp they left
death to every lover maddened by passion.
Every resolute warrior setting out.

And they turned toward farewell, while every eye
And they inclined towards farewell while each eyelid
poured forth tears like a brimming cup.
Spilled tears like a pouring bottle.

Their tears flowed over perfume,
Their tears flowed with fragrance
as bubbles rippled upon wine.
As ambergris flows from pressed wine.

فَأَبدَلَها الهَوادِج بِالخِيامِ
Gazelles caught by separation's hunter,
Gazelles hunted by the archers of Bain
who gave them howdahs in place of tents.
Who replaced them with tents.

فَترجع نَحوَ مَقتَلَتي سِهامي
I trade stealthy arrows of glances with them,
I wink at them for moments furtively
and my arrows return toward my own vital spot.
Then they turn back towards my slaughtering arrows.

برودٌ رِيقُهنَّ وَكَيف يَحمى

Cool is their saliva—how could it grow warm,
Their saliva is cool and how can it be warm
when its course runs over paired hailstones?
When its course is over ice.

I forsook their sweet saliva, for it holds,
I deserted their remains for in it
just after sleep, the qualities of wine.
Were descriptions of wine far from sleep.

And I swear: no spiced, heady wine—
And I swear since an addicted drinker
that has rested in the jar year after year,
Has dwelled in the lands a year after year.

Its tingling sensation in the bones.

With a sweeter taste than their kissing
when they awaken from a drowsy sleep.
When they wake from the sleep of slumber.

I have not sipped their sweetness, but
And I have not sipped their wine but
the balsam twigs bore witness to it.
The vines of Bisham testify to that.

When their veils are translucent, we say:
When their veils smile we say
“The full moon's radiance beneath rainless clouds.”
The moonlight from beneath the cover.

The languor of their eyelids is my heart's sickness;
The sickness of their eyelids is the sickness of my heart
and can sickness be healed by sickness?
And does sickness recover from sickness?

And near my ability and fervor
for them, amid youth and passion,
I find them with youth and passion.

and refrain from it even in sleep.
And I dream of it when asleep.

A love with neither fault nor sin,
A love with no fault or sin
when love is corrupted by sins.
If love is ruined by sins.

Intended a base act my bones would betray me.

One of them, O’ perfect full moon.

As the dew wronged one who once compared
the bounty of al-Mufarrij's palm to the clouds.
The dew to the drizzle of clouds.

A young man whose hands were fashioned for giving,
A man whose hands are created for gifts
as the tongue was fashioned for speech.
As the tongue is created for speech.

I alighted with him, and a noble man drew me close,
Poverty befell him so a noble one drew near
whom lofty pursuits share in the finest division.
Whose honor divided the Most High equally.

His left hand is for giving or the reins,
So he favored his right hand for attaining or restraining
and his right for a spear or a cutting sword.
And his left for spear or sword.

And how can the adornments of a pigeon be hidden?

He revived virtues after death
and raised their edifice after its collapse.
And rebuilt them after destruction.

And he divides his wealth among every delegation,
And he portions his wealth in every delegation
like the meat of sacrificial camels in the sacred city.
Like the meat of the body in the sacred lands.

On his cheek's surface, cheerfulness has a sheen,
With the palm of his cheek the people have water
like the watery sheen upon the flat of a sword.
Like the water on the surface of a sword.

Before him, I had never seen a lion receive
And I have never seen a lion before him
guests with greetings and peace.
Who welcomes guests with greetings and peace.

His coat of mail sounds on a soft coat
a cub's sire, whose claws are bloodied.
My father Shibl, his claws always (ready).

A young man who met battle before his adult teeth appeared,
A young man who met the tumult before the unsheathing (of swords)
and led its armies before reaching puberty.
And led its armies before puberty.

So he is not frightened by perilous depths until
So he does not heed the waves until
the fish is frightened in the mighty deeps.
The whale heeds in the deep dark-blue.

He leaves his adversary, with the spear lodged in him,
He leaves his spear while the spear is in him
a cross among monks standing upright.
A cross between monks standing in prayer.

The cutting swords shroud him in blood,
The swords wrap him in blood
and the hooves bury him in battle-dust.
And the hooves bury him in darkness.

They pour the enemies' blood from every coat of mail,
The blood of the enemy flows from every coat of mail
as wine flows through the gaps of a straining-cloth.
Like the flow of wine through the holes of bottles.

And they let them hear the speech of death loudly
through ears formed by paired thrusts.
With ears of repeated stabbings.

His thrust was not an ear, but
And his stab was no ear but
hearing comes from the impact of words.
Hearing comes from the clashing of speech.

And in the necks he opens jaws like a she-camel's,
And the mouths of spears gape in the darkness
dripping blood instead of foam.
Dyed with blood instead of pomade.

He always has a herald within himself,
He has from his soul someone always calling him
calling him to lofty ranks:
To the most lofty of ranks.

on the day of bounty, “Hasten to giving!”
So the day of generosity he is lively for gifts
and on the day of war, “Hasten to the press of battle!”
And the day of war lively for crowds.

If glory is attained by longing
the noble would not outshine the base.
Then the noble would have no merit over the vile.

Even if it was beauty to the people.

Thus is the pearl most beautiful to behold
upon a shy maiden's neck, strung together.
On the neck of the buyer in order.

And the bounty of another is disgrace to him
like adornment upon a blunt sword.
Like a birthmark on the face of a flawless sword.

God deemed him worthy of the heights of honor,
God saw him worthy of the eminent
and raised him above the summits of the noble.
So he raised him to the peaks of the generous.

He met his Creator's favor with gratitude,
So he reciprocated the blessings of his Creator with gratitude
and gratitude invites its continuance.
And indeed, gratitude invites permanence.

In the position of arrows from a quiver.

So may his sons be forever blessed arrows
and blessed be the arrow of God's faith, the archer.
And blessed is the arrow of the religion of God its shooter.

For them, the herald's summons is the same:
The call of the announcer is the same among them
“Come to spear-fighting—or to food!”
“Come to the spears or the food!”

You have come good pilgrims and you were
there in the place of the Corner and the Station.
The station of the corner from it and the standing place.

And content with your gifts however small.

how excellent are security and continuance!
So he granted security and permanence.

how, then, will those below the Imam fare?
Then how could those besides the Imam be?

how can he fear what is beneath mankind?
Then how can they fear others?

Toward you I made the colt's breast a thread,
To you I have made the chest of the experienced steed a path
with which I stitch desert to desert.
I strike with strikes and counter strikes.

When the battle intensifies after being slow
it fills its mouth around the bridle's bit.
It opens its mouth on the horse’s bit.

I leave it but not out of greed.
إِذاif قَنِعَis content الهِزَبرُthe mighty lion بقوتwith the food كَلبٍof a dog
إِذا قَنِعَ الهِزَبرُ بقوت كَلبٍ
فَلَيسَthen there is no الفَرقُdifference إِلّاexcept فيin الأَساميthe names
فَلَيسَ الفَرقُ إِلّا في الأَسامي
If a mighty lion is content with a dog's food,
If the coat of mail is content with the food of a dog
then the only difference is in the names.
Then the difference is only in the names.
رَضَعتَyou suckled الجودَgenerosity قَبلَbefore الدَرmilk طِفلاًas an infant
رَضَعتَ الجودَ قَبلَ الدَر طِفلاً
وَماand there is no لِرَضاعfor nursing on جودِكَyour bounty مِنany فِطامِweaning
وَما لِرَضاع جودِكَ مِن فِطامِ
As an infant, you suckled generosity before milk,
You suckled generosity before wealth an infant
and there is no weaning from nursing on your bounty.
And for the suckling of your generosity there is no weaning.
فَجودُso the generosity سواكof others besides you رَمَيةُa shot غَيرa non- رامٍarcher
فَجودُ سواك رَمَيةُ غَير رامٍ
وَجودكand your generosity رَميةa shot منfrom كَفِّthe palm رامِof an archer
وَجودك رَمية من كَفِّ رامِ
The generosity of others is a shot by a non-archer,
So the generosity of other than you is an arrow gone astray
while yours is a shot from an archer's palm.
And your generosity is an arrow from the hand of an archer.
فَعِشso live واسلَمand stay safe قَريرَcontented العَينَof eye تَعلوrising high
فَعِش واسلَم قَريرَ العَينَ تَعلو
وَتبلغand attain زاwhat (probable reading) تُؤمِّلyou hope for مِنof مَرامِa goal
وَتبلغ زا تُؤمِّل مِن مَرامِ
So live and stay safe, with tranquil eyes, rising high,
So live and remain well my delight rises
and attain whatever goal you hope for.
And reaches what you hope for from purpose.
