وَغَدا غَريماً لِلنَّوى بِغَرامِهِ
The sanctuary was recalled, and he wept at its doves' cooing;
The abode was mentioned, so it wept for the cooing of its dove
And through his passion he became separation's debtor.
And it became passionate in the morning for the grain due to its love

O dwelling, I never thought that I
Could live if ever I parted from its gazelles.
Would live if I moved away from its tranquility

Peace from me upon your hills—a greeting,
Peace be upon its Lord, greetings
If you are content with a lovesick man's salutation.
If you are content with bringing peace

Then the tears of the eyes flow towards its pouring

A dwelling where I lived—[unclear word] the suns of its courtyard—
I sang melodiously for the fading of its suns
And enjoyed union with the full moons of its tents.
And I gained connection and prayer from its tents

With each languid-eyed one who made me ill
Each tender-eyed one made me rise high
With longing, and consoled me with a cup of his wine.
And gave me a cup to make me accustomed to its wine

I have not forgotten him when he visited me veiled,
I did not forget him when he visited me masked
Like a branch in his movements and his stature.
Like a branch in its movements and stature

I embraced the branch of frankincense beneath his cheek
And kissed the full moon beneath his veil.
And I kissed the full moon beneath his wrappings

And I let my eye graze on the garden of his beauty,
And I made my eyes graze upon the meadow of his beauty
In delight, and my ear on the pearls of his speech.
Delighting while my hearing was a pearl of his speech

All this, yet before his waistcloth stood my chastity,
This was despite his modesty having decency for me
Which kept me, praise be to God, from the sins beneath it.
Which warded off sins, praise be to God, from his wrongdoings

Blessings for which I thanked the emir, because he
Favors which I thanked the Prince for since
Clothed me in chastity through his beneficence.
He bestowed chastity upon me with his gifts

He donned chastity before donning his belt,
He wore the cloak of purity before wearing his belt
And grew accustomed to lavishing bounty before his weaning.
And he was accustomed to generosity before weaning

And with the two eyes of his judgment saw what lay behind him,
And he saw with the eye of his opinion what was behind him
By intellect, as plainly as the eye sees what lies before him.
Mentally like the eye’s view of what’s in front of him

He filled hearts with awe and love of him
For him, so that the star lay beneath his ambition.
So the star fell short of his aspirations

And in a day he bestowed such lavish bounty
And he attained from giving gifts in his days
As Hatim did not achieve in a year.
What Hatim did not attain in his year

And through generosity he attained, while seated, such glory
He was generous so he attained while sitting from his glory
As no other attained while standing.
What no one else attained when standing

What he spends the night unraveling is not securely bound,
What he built at night is not easily undone
Ever; nor can his binding be undone.
Never to be repealed, nor his structuring repealed

Leave happily to the chaste, and only
Casts a frown from that face upon his reproachers.
The frowning face encounters it on his bridled-mouth

Understanding falls short of his qualities,
Minds fall short of comprehending his attributes
And the gaze is lowered before him out of reverence.
And the eyes look away in reverence of him

Wakeful in pursuing eminence, even if he sleeps,
Awake in attaining the heights, and if he sleeps
It is as though he remains awake in his sleep.
It is as if he is awake during his sleep

And if he initiates a matter, he exhausts himself
And sees desire itself enamored of him as he completes it.
And sees personal desire acting upon completing it

He encounters the vizierate, though it is beneath his station,
He takes on the ministry while it is beneath his worth
And sees the one served among his own servants.
And sees the servant while he is of his servants

Pens creak from his writings
And pens are trimmed by his pens.
And pens are worn from his writings

And the essence of his life is disdained by whoever does not spend the night
Unassailable under his patronage and protection.
Loyal in his allegiance and his binding pact

Or if he wished he counted honor from his paternal uncles

A people, if glory became distributed in the morning
Have the heights of its head and its hump.
Then its highest points are theirs, and its loftiness

Such excellence—had Time placed his era earlier,
Virtue, if only fate had brought forth his era
The shortcomings of its Ziyad and Hisham would have become plain.
It would show the deficiency of the increase of Ziyad and Hisham

So be safe from the envious, and do not cease
To be Time's pillar, enduring as long as it endures.
To be a pillar for fate, lasting in its duration

An ally of the dust thereby—the envier's nose.
At the envious, with it an ally against their bridled-mouths
