My two friends, sleep has held you long; awake!

For the first sandgrouse have passed you both in a flock.

The fringes of night grew thin, and the darkness lifted,

And dew became love-stricken, its eyes welling with tears.

As though night travel—while dawn rocks the young man—

Were a coward's heart, suddenly assailed by fear and terror.

As though the sky were a distraught woman, her blossoms doubled,

Who then tore coverings from her breast in anguish.

Is she taking vengeance on the night, or is it the avenger?

For it has drawn a keen sword across the crown of its head.

    فأن المَعالي ظل أَقسامها نَهبا

    O dream-image of the ʿĀmirī woman, leave me be;

For glory's allotted shares remain spoils for the taking.

    وَما عَزَّ أَنف اللَيثِ إِن لَم يَنَل غَصبا

    And many a trackless journey has proved more fruitful for a youth;

Nor is the lion's nose held high unless he takes by force.

And a woman spoke—whatever I forget, I shall not forget her words—

As she scattered moist pearls from her eyelid.

Your pardon for a grief-stricken woman I have left

To death's vicissitudes, exhausted through no fault of her own.

Is there no king among mankind besides Qurwāsh

Through whom you might gain redress for your days' harshness?

So I said—as she stood, the edges of her eyelid

At my sleeve, and my tears streaming like hers—

Let me scent his showers; then vie

With your wealth against rain and clouds—but not his bounty.

    A high-souled lord—God forbid!—were he to raise his foes

Toward the sun to honor her, she would swell with pride.

You see around him white gifts and the blood of foes,

And brown lances and well-built, lean-bellied steeds.

Blood-red deaths meet death at his hands,

And dusky calamities draw calamity from his fang.
