لَوif كانَwere حَرُّthe heat الوَجدِof longing يَعقبfollows بعدهafter it
بَردُthe coolness الوِصالof union غفرتI would forgive ذاكthat لِذاكاfor the sake of that
If, after the heat of longing, there followed
If the agony of passion were followed
The coolness of union, I would forgive the former for the latter.
By the coolness of union, I'd forgive the former for the latter
لاno بَلrather شُجيتُI was grieved بِمَنby one who يَبيتُspends the night مُسَلَّماًunharmed
خاليempty الضُلوعِthe ribs وَلاand not يُحسُّhe feels شجاكاyour grief
No, rather I am grieved by one who spends the night unharmed,
But no! I'm tormented by one who sleeps content
Empty within his ribs, and feeling none of your grief.
With ribs all vacant, and insensible of your torment
إِنif يُصبِحواthey wake صاحينsober مِنfrom خَمرِthe wine الهَوىof love
فَلَقَدthen indeed سَقَوكَthey made you drink مِنَof الغَرامِpassion دراكاin quick succession
If they wake sober from the wine of love,
If they awake sober from the wine of love
Yet they have surely made you drink passion, draught upon draught.
You've been made to drink of passion a full draught
ياoh لَيتwould that شُغلكyour absorption بِالأَسىin sorrow أَعداهمinfected them
أَوor لاnot فَليتthen would that فَراغهمtheir freedom from care أَعداكاinfected you
Oh, would that your absorption in sorrow infected them,
Oh would that your anguish had turned them to foes
Or, if not, would that their freedom from care infected you!
Or would that their ease had but turned you their foe!
أَهوىًlove? وَذُلاًand abasement فيin الهَوىlove وَطماعَةand craving
أَبَداًforever تَعالىexalted be اللَهَGod ماhow أَشقاكاwretched you are
Love, abasement in love, and craving—
Abject yet proud in love, and greedy forever
Forever? Exalted be God—how wretched you are!
God forbid this affliction of yours!
ياO قَلبheart كَيفhow عَلِقتَyou became caught فيin أَشراكِهِمtheir snares
وَلَقَدand indeed عهدتُكَI have known you تُفلِتُyou escape الأَشراكاthe snares
O heart, how did you become caught in their snares?
Oh heart, how you stuck in their toils,
Yet I have known you to slip free of snares.
When I knew you as one who slips free of snares!
أَكبيتَdid you stumble? حينَwhen تقصَّدتكdeliberately targeted you سِهامهمtheir arrows
قَدindeed كُنتُI had been عَنagainst أَمثالهاtheir like أَنهاكاwarning you
Did you stumble when their arrows took aim at you?
You showed strength when their arrows sought you out
I had warned you against their like.
Once I'd have thought you impervious to the likes
إِنif ذُبتَyou melted مِنfrom كَمَدٍanguish فَقَدthen indeed جَرَّhas brought الهَوىlove
هَذاthis السِقامُsickness عَليَّupon me منon جرّاكاyour account
If you have melted with anguish, love has brought
If you've wasted in yearning, then love has drawn
This sickness upon me on your account.
This sickness over me, because of your draining away
ياO قَلبheart ليتكwould that you حيثsince لَمdid not تَدعِforsake الهَوىlove
علَّقتَyou made fall in love منsomeone بِهَواكwith love for you مثلlike هَواكاyour love
O heart, since you did not forsake love, would that you
Oh heart, if only you'd never left off from love
Had made someone love you with a love like your own.
You'd have hung, from one love, something like it!
لاdo not تشكوَنَّever complain إِليَّto me وَجداًlonging بَعدَهاafter it
هَذاthis الَّذيwhat جَرَّتhave brought عَلَيكَupon you يَداكاyour two hands
Do not complain to me of longing after this;
Do not complain to me, after them, of passion
This is what your own hands have brought upon you.
They whose hands have brought this upon you
I will surely punish you بِالغَليلِwith burning thirst وَإِنَّنيand indeed I
لَولاكbut for you لَمdid not أَذُقِI taste الهَوىlove لَولاكاbut for you
I shall surely punish you with burning thirst; indeed, I
I'll punish you with estrangement! And yet
Would not have tasted love but for you—but for you.
Had you not been, I'd ne'er have tasted love
ياO عاذِلَreproacher المُشتاقِof the longing one دَعهُleave him فَإِنَّهُfor indeed he
يَطويenfolds عَلىaround الزَفَراتِthe sighs غيرother than حشاكاyour breast
O you who reproach the longing one, leave him, for he
Oh reproacher of the longing lover, leave him be
Enfolds his sighs in a breast unlike yours.
He who folds away sobs other than yours
لَوif كانَwere قلبكyour heart عِندَهُwith him ماnot لمتُهُI blamed him
حاشاكmay you be spared مِمّاfrom what عِندَهُhe has حاشاكاmay you be spared
If your heart were with him, I would not have blamed him;
If your heart were with him, you'd not blame him
May you be spared what he endures—may you be spared!
Far be you from what's in him! Far be you!
