وَواصَل الهَمِّ فيمَن لا يُواصِلُهُ
He defied the reprovers when his reprovers persisted,
He disobeyed the coquettes when their coquetry intensified,
And kept company with sorrow over one who would not keep his.
And kept worrying about one who doesn't worry about him,
وَطالَand grew long لَيلthe night مُحِبٍّof a lover فيin تَفَكُّرِهِhis contemplation

And the lover's night grew long in contemplation
And the night of a lover lengthened in his thinking,
Of one who had begun to put him off over his promise.
Of one whose promised meeting now evades him,

إِن ضَنَّ يَوماً بِوَصلِ الحُبِّ باخِلُهُ
And he was open-handed, generous in offering him union,
He used to be kind and generous in uniting with him,
Even if love's miser one day withheld that bond.
If one day he was miserly in connecting the love.

God bless those days of ours gone by,
By God, those days of ours which have passed,
While Time was heedless of us and we outwitted it.
And time is heedlessly mocking us,

While Time was heedless of us, sweet to us was
And time is heedlessly enjoying for us,
The life of youth; the sweetest life is the carefree one.
The life of youth, and its most enjoyable life is heedless,

And our cup's fragrant draught was like a waft of musk,
Our cup is like the fragrant breeze of musk,
A young gazelle with sweet manners passed it round.
Stirred by a tender, sweet hand with its gestures,

He served the drinking companions wine from his glances,
The regretful were quenched with wine from his joys,
From the enchantment of a gaze whose Babel had clothed it in magic.
From the magic of a glance it adorned with its magic,

Like a willow branch, the boughs of gardens will waver tomorrow,
Every discerning man likens him to his peer—
So too every sensible being who rivals it,

O Abu Al-Alaa, whose comfort is majestic,
For no creature rivals him in glory.
None among the created can match his glory,

And one who has clouds from the rain of his palm,
And one who has clouds of his comfort's rain,
His downpours showering bounty upon mankind.
Upon the land with dew, its rivers gush forth,

So, O Ata Allah, O son of the noblest, and one
So O gift of God, O son of the most generous two, and who
Whose description establishes the proofs of his eminence:
With his description the proofs have risen high,

You are he whose palm, with generosity, has flooded
You are the one whose open hand covered,
All mankind, and whose bounty has encompassed all creation.
All the people, and its attainment encompassed creation.
