حَيَيتُما من دمنتي طَلينِ

عطلين موحشتين مقفرتينِ
Greetings to you both, two ruined camps of Talayn,
You two revived me from my solitude
Bare, desolate, and deserted.
In deserted, desolate, and dreary days

نوءthe seasonal rains of الرَشاal-Rasha وَبَوارحand the fierce winds of الفرعَينِthe Two Spouts
نوء الرَشا وَبَوارح الفرعَينِ
Their open grounds were effaced, through long decay, by
Their tracks erased the length of affliction
The rains of al-Rasha and the fierce winds of the Two Spouts.
The downpour and the twigs of the two branches
وَمَحاهماand erased them both مِنfrom آلِthe kin of محوةMahwa وَالصَباand the east wind
وَمَحاهما مِن آلِ محوة وَالصَبا
أَذيالtrailing hems غاديتينtwo passing at dawn رائِحتينِtwo passing at dusk
أَذيال غاديتين رائِحتينِ
And Mahwa's kindred and the east wind erased them
And they erased them from the family of delusion and youth
With the trailing hems of two winds, passing morning and evening.
Trails of two departing ones returning
وَكأَنَّماand as though أَبقينthey left منof رسميهماtheir two traces

طِرسَين مِن أَثوابِ ذي القرنَينِ
And it is as though, of their two traces, they left
As if they left of their form
Two parchments from the garments of Dhu al-Qarnayn.
Two impressions of the garb of him of the two horns

O you who saw our companions' departing women, as though they were
O you who saw their tents as if they were
Palm trees on the hills, or the doum palms of Dhu al-Hadaqayn.
Palm trees of sand dunes or hummocks with two slopes

They dwell in camel-litters in the valley of Maqdab,
He dwells in valleys with clustered tents
The hills' rock-basin and the eastern slopes of the two mountains.
Few palms and land between two mountains

From all the hearts of men, as though—
From all resolute men as if they were
Slender of waist, an enchantress in both eyes.
Yellow ostriches, enchanters of the two eyes

She ensnares men's hearts, as though
She hunts the minds of men as if
She were casting some of the two angels' spells.
She shoots with some resolves of the two angels

And her smiling mouth and the pearls of her necklace seem
Her smile and pearls of her necklace appear
Two strings of pearls, harmoniously matched and ordered.
Two joined, well-arranged pearls

And when she walks with mincing steps, she is like
And when she walks, plucking her steps, it's as if
The king of al-Khawarnaq, strutting in two striped cloaks.
She is an arrogant king walking in two carpets
تَزهوshe excels proudly عَلىover القَمَرِthe moon المُنيرthe shining one بِوَجهِهاwith her face

وَتَتيهُ من حُسنِ عَلى الثقلينِ
With her face she outshines the shining moon,
She prides herself over the shining moon with her face
And in her beauty she exults above humans and jinn.
And the two weighty ones wander in her beauty

In the narcissi of her two eyes is magic, if she gazes,
With the narcissism of her eyes, it's magic if she sings
Or, if she unveils, in the anemones of her two cheeks.
Or smiles with the two cheeks' anemones

She has a weapon whose nearness does no harm,
And she has a weapon that does not hurt in proximity
Yet distance from it brings death.
And distance from it brings worries

Glances of an eye, like swords whose scabbards
Glances of an eyelid like swords, her eyelids
Are her eyelids—and two breasts like camel calves.
And two teats of a breast

And she has a figure the likes of which I have not seen
She sways in it as a Rudayni spear sways.
In which two shoulders quiver

Full-hipped, with supple legs.

Lush of frame, her flanks dewy,
Fine bones, supple bust
Her fingers tender, both sides of her waist slender.
Cheap waist, delicate at the two hips

I once enjoyed life with them, but it was betrayed
I had a life with them in which I delighted, but fate betrayed it
By separation's vicissitudes and the alternation of night and day.
The turns of time and ages overturning

In days when lovers were not frightened by separation
Days when cares didn't prevent lovers,
From us, nor did the raven of parting croak.
And the crow of separation didn't croak over us

So her tears and words of blame were
Two strings of pearls, parted and scattered.
Two scattered, separated pearls

How can you wish to journey away from our land?
"Where are you going, leaving our land?
We would ransom you with our parents and both brothers!
We'd ransom you with two parents and two brothers"

I answered her patiently, for I am leaving
From you tomorrow, on Monday morning.
From you tomorrow morning of Monday

And I will surely kill non-existence the killing of a rebel
With generosity wafting from Husayn's palm—
With generosity from the palm of Hussein

The glorious son of Abu Hisham, possessed of bounty,
The glorious, son of Abi Hisham of munificence
Pure in glory, noble through both grandfathers.
Pure gem, refined of the two cheeks

فَنَشا بِمَجدٍ معلم الطَرفَينِ
He inherited high honors from his father and grandfather,
Heir of glories from his father and grandfather
And grew up in glory, distinguished at both ends.
Thus he arose with glory, exemplar of the two sides

A house of generosity, his glory is Jamahiri;
The house of generosity, his glory popular
Through him Yemen rises above the two stars.
With it Yemen rises over the two stars

Time lowers its gaze in awe of him when he unsheathes
His ferocity humbles the times when he is stirred
The keen sword of the pulpits, cutting with both edges.
The one with blunted edges, blunt of the two cutting sides

Girded with his opinion and sword,
Two swords suspended from his two shoulders.
Two swords tied to two shoulders

Blessings offered to the desirous or devout
Abundant in gifts, he spreads both palms.
All bounties, spreader of the two palms

He gained superiority through his grandfather and grandfather
So he is the favored one, complete in both kinds of honor.
Thus he is the preferred one, complete in the two honors

Ambitions reaching beyond where the sun and moon rise,
Transcended the ascent of the two moons

What will you do tomorrow morning with a poet
In threadbare clothes, his two feet travel-worn?
Wearing ragged clothes, feet covered in dust?

And stayed in Shiraz for seven months
And returned from each place with Hunayn's slipper, empty-handed.
And turned from every place with the nostalgia of yearning

And I blame the days, blaming a blamer
And by that he judges between them and me.
And thereby he judges between them and me

The train of generosity, reaching with the two sleeves
