ذمامa pledge فروعbranches قَدalready ذممناwe have condemned أُصولَهاtheir roots

God will not let it bring good and thus inspire hope—
the pledge of branches whose roots we have condemned.
إِذاif الدارthe house منfrom قبلbefore العَفاءِobliteration نَبَتwas inhospitable بِناto us
فَكَيفَthen how تُرَجّىcan be hoped for لِلمُقامِfor dwelling طُلولَهاits ruins
If the house was inhospitable to us before its ruin,
how can we hope to dwell in its ruins?
هَزَزتُI brandished المَواضيthe keen blades فاِنثنَتand they recoiled عَنfrom ضَرائِبيmy targets
فَماso what أَرَneed (word fragment) بيmy (word ending) منfrom أَنto أَهُزَّI brandish كَليلَهاtheir blunt ones
I brandished keen blades, but they recoiled from my targets;
so what need have I to brandish their blunt ones?
إِذاwhen قيلَit is said دارhouse الفَخرِglory كنتمyou were ضيوفَهاits guests
وَإِنand if قيلَit is said دارhouse اللُؤمbaseness كُنتُمyou were حلولَهاits residents
When the house of glory is named, you are its guests;
but if the house of baseness is named, you are its residents.
وَقولةand an utterance خزيdisgrace فيكُمُabout you ستتَفِزُّنيwill goad me
وَأعلمُand I know أَلّاthat there is no بُدَّescape مِنfrom أَنthat أَقولَهاI utter it
And a word of disgrace about you will goad me,
and I know I must utter it.
