وَبِمُهجَتيand with my lifeblood ياO عاذِليَّmy reproachers مُهَفهَفٌa slender-waisted youth
جمعgathered التنحولِslenderness بِأَسرِهِin its entirety فيin خَصرِهِhis waist
And I would ransom with my lifeblood, O my reproachers, a slender youth
With my delight, O you who blame me, he is swaying,
Who gathered all slenderness into his waist.
Gathering the curving in his waist altogether,
أَسروهthey took him captive منfrom بلدa land الثُغورِthe frontiers فَأَصبَحَتand so became
نَفسيmy soul أَسيرَةa captive ناظريهِhis two eyes وَثَغرِهِand his mouth
They took him captive from a frontier land, and now
They captured him from the land of frontiers, so my soul became,
My soul is captive to his eyes and mouth.
A captive of his eyes and mouth,
وَحَياتِهِand by his life لَولاhad it not been for مَلاحةَthe beauty of وَجهِهِhis face
ماnot ذَلَّwas humbled إِيمانيmy faith لعزَّةِto the might of كُفرِهِhis unbelief
And by his life, had it not been for his face’s beauty,
And his life - if it were not for the beauty of his face,
My faith would not have bowed to the might of his unbelief.
My faith would not have surrendered to the glory of his blasphemy
