A ruined campsite at al-Ramatayn has faded, and a path.

It pours forth for an eye that neither overflows nor pants.

Away with a heart that does not melt with yearning!

No liver escapes being seared and roasted.

The ash-gray doves exchanged laments, stirring in me

Whispers of longing, surging in the heart.

I stood beside it, my two eyes as though

A downpour of rain had replenished them [final word unclear].

I remembered wide-eyed beauties who had been in that very place,

One evening when every wide-eyed beauty drew near, yet held back.

And my heart sought solace when I remembered its gazelle—

For ladies with necks, throats are a refuge [syntax unclear].

So I said, while my heart was being sent flying by

Torments revived by longing fanned into flame:

Blessed be the upland meadows, now that they have settled there,

Noble virgins upon whom the pouring rain has fallen.

    يُجاذِبهنَّ العَبقَريُّ المدَلَّجُ

    Cherished women who have served neither husband nor father;

Rich brocade vies with them [epithet unclear].

When they exchange smiles, they shame the hills’ smiling flowers—

Their daisies, before the women’s spaced, daisy-white teeth.

And lend them a sweet fragrance, just as

    Wafting ambergris clothes their garments.

My two friends, this is jest’s watering place; take the right way,

For I have a path through earnestness and jest.

A woman said, when she saw me girded for the journey,

Troubled by the treachery of saddle-girding Time:

‘In what direction do you seek a champion for yourself?

Will you not abandon your resolve and find relief?

Is it right to assail Time when it attacks?’

I said to her, ‘Gently! Where, then, is refuge?’

On the road to God’s House and the Sanctuary to which

The massive sacrificial camels are led, gleaming.

And where the travel-worn mounts meet after their long journey,

Streaming, as riders drive them among the women’s litters.

If the nights bring me to him, and there flows to me

His bounty—he who never rebuffs those seeking his gifts—

Then surely my fate will turn back, humbled, from harming me,

And return, after snarling, with a death-rattle.

How can Time withstand, when it kindles its fires, one who hopes

In Abu al-Dhawwad’s shade, exulting and walking with swaying steps?

Resolve lays bare his double-edged sword,

And from his mail the full moon of darkness shines.

When the crowned ruler’s judgment wanders amid his kingdom,

Dawning brightness in noble deeds quenches its thirst.

A youth whom noble deeds have adorned with amulets

Of praise, growing and gladdening every day.

Mastery of affairs’ bright faces was granted him by

His hands, and judgment kindled amid calamities.

    فَلَيسَ لَهُ إِلّا إِلَيهِ معرَّجُ

    He has mastered the roads to glory in every arena;

Glory has no place to turn except to him.

But for a man who reached the Pleiades through lordliness,

He would be ascending between the two Simak stars.

Toward you, Abu al-Dhawwad, hope has sent

Mounts guided by your clear, radiant path.

With them I crossed the heat of cares, and they came to be

Ablaze in a sea of bounty from your palms.

Only when they knew their destination was

The homes of seekers of greatness did they breathe out fragrance.

[Unclear opening] against a Time, O son of Jarrah, that has wronged me,

While you are near me, yet show no protective anger or distress.
