وَماand not عِشقيmy love لَهُfor him وَحشاًugly لِأَنّيbecause I
وَما عِشقي لَهُ وَحشاً لِأَنّي
تَرَكتُI forsook الحُسنَbeauty واختَرتَand you chose القَبيحاthe ugly one
تَرَكتُ الحُسنَ واختَرتَ القَبيحا
And my love for him, ugly as he is, is not because I
My love for him is not bizarre, though
forsook beauty and you chose the ugly one.
I've forsaken beauty, choosing the uncomely.
وَلَكِنbut غِرتُI felt jealous أَنthat أَهوىI love مَليحاًa handsome man
وَلَكِن غِرتُ أَن أَهوى مَليحاً
وَكُلُّand all الناسِpeople يَهوونَlove المَليحاthe handsome
وَكُلُّ الناسِ يَهوونَ المَليحا
Rather, I felt jealous at the thought of loving a handsome man,
Nay, I took pride in loving one most handsome,
when everyone loves the handsome.
When all mankind desires a comely lover.
