Come now, Abu Hasan: you have taken your place on high,

between the hump and the crest of the withers.

How has this age bestowed you so generously, though it

is indeed miserly with a perfect man, son of a perfect man?

    وَاللَهُ قَد يُدعى وَلَيسَ بِغافِلِ

    O master, I call on you not because you are heedless;

God, too, may be called upon, though He is not heedless.

Tell the emir—not everyone who moves

his tongue before kings is truly a speaker—

I offer gifts, and others offer gifts, so we are treated alike.

What difference is there between their excesses and my merits?

    Spring's blossoms—and how can a place live

that spring's torrential rain has not brought to life?

And know for certain that every favor

is counted by me as a treasure in the end.

Were I in the desert, it would be no strange thing

for me to thirst; but I am beside the shore.

And he is spring—and how can a place live

that spring's pouring rain has not brought to life?
