my soul be your ransom, defender and lavish giver!
وَإِذاand when أَتَيتَyou performed فَضيلَةa virtuous deed أَخفيتَهاyou concealed it
حَتّىso that كَأَنَّكَas though you قَدalready أَتَيتَhad committed جُناحاa sin
Whenever you perform a virtuous deed, you conceal it,
as though you had committed a sin.
لِلعُرفkindness has عَرفa fragrance نَشرِهِits diffusion فيin سَيرِهِits course
كالمِسكِlike musk مَهماhowever much ازدادَit increases صَوناًin concealment فاحاit grows fragrant
Kindness has a fragrance that spreads along its course,
like musk: the more closely guarded, the more fragrant it grows.
وَأخand a brother دعوتكyour summons بَعدَafter طولِthe length of نُعاسِهِhis slumber
فازتاعso he started نَحوtoward الجَرسِthe sound ثُمَّthen ارتاحاrejoiced
And a brother, after long slumber, heard your summons,
started toward its sound, then rejoiced.
نازَعتُهُI traded with him فيكَabout you القَوافيthe rhymes فانتَشىso he grew intoxicated
فَكَأَنَّماso it was as though نازَعتهI traded with him الأَقداحاwine-cups
I traded rhymes about you with him, and he grew intoxicated,
as though I had traded wine-cups with him:
مَدحاًpraise يُصَدقهconfirms it فَعالَكyour deeds آنِفاًjust before
إِنَّindeed الكَريمَthe generous man يُصَدِّقmakes truthful المدّاحاthe panegyrist
praise that your deeds had already made true;
indeed, the generous man makes his praiser truthful.
فَلَوso if ارتَقىrose شَخصthe body of امرىءٍa man كَمحلِّهِas high as his station
يَوماًone day لَصافَحَتthen would shake hands النُجومthe stars صِفاحاpalm to palm
If a man's body rose as high as his station,
one day, the stars would clasp his hand, palm to palm.
