Parting kindled on Thursday an army

for sorrow, with the heart its blazing furnace.

May I not remember Thursday, when you surprised me—

they were there; yet I do not forget Thursday.

When their throngs departed from an abode

that unraveled my patience and stirred deep-rooted longing.

A spring abode: its people left, and then it became

empty and desolate, though once it was welcoming.

Sorrow roused the pale camels of abiding longing

in my heart, when they roused the pale camels.

And tears dripped when the pale camels were strung in file,

and I loaded the train of my tears with souls.

They turned the red anemone's color when

my heart became a mash for sorrow's dye.

And let Time follow ease with hardship,

love with separation, and its blessings with misery.

It makes this one laugh today, and tomorrow makes him weep,

so you see everyone both laughing and frowning.

Thus its vicissitudes are dealt among people:

it wounds and sickens one, while another is healed.

And when it follows ill fortune with good

for a young man, it follows good fortune with ill.

And it gives the base man a precious lot,

then gives the worthy man a paltry lot.

Thus you see the virtuous, cultivated man, possessed

of understanding, ill-fated despite his great worth.

    فاتَ في حُبِّهِ لَنا التَنفيسا

    Our Time is a father, and we are his sons;

in his love for us, he has gone beyond granting relief.

He divided fortune unjustly among his sons,

and so the subordinate became a chief.

He placed knowledge and keen discernment in us,

and reason and lofty, precious wisdom.

Outwardly, the division contains injustice, but

inwardly there is justice that shuns deceit.

So seek God's help in your affairs, and be patient:

a man of merit is not one to despair.

And indeed I said these words to Time

when it yielded nothing and became barren and dry:

O Time, if you are rock,

then in both my hands is the miracle of Moses.

And even if you are every noble man's ailment,

I have, through skill, the healing art of Jesus.

    I have, O Abu al-Husayn, a heart

empty of love for humankind, turned upside down.

Yet it is full of you, with love made pure,

which has banished from it adulteration and deceit.

You are peerless in glory and high honors,

their glory forever reserved for you.

Who can rival you, when you are people

who have never ceased to sit upon the stars?

And if an inferior man seeks to diminish you,

glory turns his scheme back, overturned.

People dwindled in your age, while you increased

    in eminence and ancient nobility.

    وَلَقَد رمته فَكان شَموسا

    And praise came to you, strutting and tossing its head;

I had indeed sought it, but it was untamable.

This praise-poem, in describing you, surpasses

all other praise, for it has now been blotted out.

    مِن جَمالٍ بِها تَروق العَروسا

    Take it, like a bride in finery being unveiled;

through its beauty, it outshines the bride.

Its wording turns the pages into gardens,

while wording other than its own mars the pages.

So its verses strut as celestial towers,

and its meanings as crescent moons and suns.
