أَرَقmore delicate مِنthan رِقَّةِthe delicacy of الشَرابِwine
A shapely maiden, fresh in youth,
Slender, in the bloom of youth,
more delicate than wine’s own delicacy.
More delicate than the delicacy of wine.
خافَتfeared عَلىfor الوَردِthe roses وَجَنَتاهاher two cheeks
فَغَطَّتso she covered الوَردَthe roses بِالنِقابِwith the veil
Her cheeks feared for their rose,
Her cheeks feared for the roses,
so she covered the rose with a veil.
So she covered the roses with a veil.
وَعاتَبتنيand she reproached me وَأيُّand what شَيءٍthing
فيin الحُبِّlove أَحلىsweeter مِنthan العِتابِreproach

And she reproached me—and what
in love sweeter than reproach?
In love is sweeter than reproach?
