وَلَيسَ عِندَ ذَوي الآلامِ يَنفَعُهُ
A lovesick man went far away, and separation's vipers sting him.
A love who has kept his distance, so separation's snakes bite him,
And among those in pain, nothing avails him.
Yet he finds no solace with those who know sorrow and pain.

حُزناً وَأَضحى سَلبياً مِنهُ ينزَعُهُ
Radiant, he tore from himself the robe of his solace,
The radiant one tore off the robe of intimacy in grief,
in sorrow, and became bereft of it, stripping it away.
And so he was stripped bare, with it wrested from him.

Each day, from his overwhelming burning anguish, he has
Each day his intense torment sends him a jinniyyah
a female jinn that strikes him down for the beloveds' pleasure.
Who promises consent from the beloved, only to fell him.

O my two companions, give me a morning drink—your excuse is gone—
My friend, you've left me at daybreak, excusing yourself,
a cup whose radiance flickers amid my misery.
A cup passed round and round again in my misery.

حَتّى تَكَلُّ عَناءً منه أَربعُهُ
And leave me with love's steed, that I may spur it on,
Leave me to gallop on love’s heels awhile,
until its four legs grow weary from the toil.
Till fourfold weariness falls away from me.

I entrust to God a young gazelle in the land of the Hijaz,
I commend to God in the land of Hijaz a secret:
whose refuge and springtime abode lie in the heart's garden.
A garden lodged in the heart, its place and bounds.

If separation swells my heart through its torment,
If remoteness enlarges my heart through its torment,
then longing has a breast that has begun to nurse it.
Then suckling’s breast has gone slack giving milk to me.

وَلا لودٍ سَها عنه يضيعُهُ
I did not part from him out of aversion to his companionship,
No love was built up for him from me, nor tenderness
nor because of affection he neglected and squandered.
Lavished on him, now squandered, lost to me.

Rather, a slanderer assailed me over him; I could not counter
But he has tempted me into error I cannot counter,
his intent to harm me, so as to fend him off.
Blocking my desire in ways hurtful to me.

A slanderer who slandered to hurt me with all his strength—
Tempted, tempted me to harm me, taxing his strength,
so may he never enjoy the sweet life he gulps!
Never content with life’s sweetness he gulps down.

Charged with the shoots of goodness, he cuts them down,
Commissioned to reap good, he harvests it,
and sees no sound judgment to sow.
Never espying in reason what he might sow.

He would decree whatever he desired, and I would accept it,
Judging as he fancied, I found him erratic,
and whatever speech came, I would listen to it.
Hearing from him what words I used to hear.

So I came to fear my death in his dwelling,
I took comfort I might die, placed as he was,
since he had no restraint to hold him back.
Since he lacked all self-restraint to curb him.

For God's sake, O longing, be gentle with the heart, for I cannot
By God, O passion, treat my heart gently, for
endure more than what you are doing.
More than you do, I cannot bear.

How can one find solace whose heart is in the west,
What consolation for one whose love lies west
while his body's pasture is the city of Fustat?
While his body makes its home east in Fustat?

A lovesick man: sleep departed by night from his eyelids,
A love sleep carried off, leaving my eyelids,
and tears flow in its wake, escorting it away.
And tears now flow in its wake, mourning it.

And you, O union, turn aside to the abode of our separation;
As for you, O union, be quick to join us in our land of parting,
perhaps you may reunite a company whose meeting is hard to attain.
Where unity of power gathers itself whole.

And water it with a night shower of reunion's life-giving rain,
Give him to drink from proximity’s flagon,
for it is effaced, its site already spurned.
For he is abased, his place folded up.

May the bygone nights in my haunts
May the nights with their encampments gone before
return there, never to bid it farewell.
Return to us in a return without farewell.

And how often we left the crescent of the cup rising
How many a crescent moon we left arising
there, its rising making the soul's sorrow set.
Where it eclipsed the cares of the soul as it rose.

Its sky is the palm of one who curbed passion with it,
Its sky cupped us away from cared by it,
outstretched toward the rope of patience, which he severs.
Outstretched toward the cord of patience it severs.

And wine goes round among us, evening and morning,
The scent of us blew about, coming and going
through the gatherings of an abode whose pasture was splendid.
Over the seats of an encampment whose range lies waste.

Wine is the wind; make of it, amid delight,
A scent—and it is the very wind—so let it waft gladness,
a trade before a loss that profits him nothing.
A commerce, before loss without gain.

And die by it the death of one for whom life is hoped,
Die by it the death of one life might be hoped for,
for a man dead from wine is a dead man whose return is assured.
So the dead by scent revive in their burial-ground.

Time's hidden treasure, it lay among his stores;
Fate's hidden hoards were in its treasures,
then he bestowed of its purity what he had withheld.
And it freely gave what it used to refuse.

As though it were twilight's glow, mixing gives it
As if it were afterglow, with mingling
a noble cloud, which it disperses without delay.
Lending it an unseen cloud without clearing.

A blamer blamed me for ignorance, so I said:
I have an excuse for longing that you cannot refute.
"For youth I have an excuse none can rebut."

I have—so put aside blame—a heart; openly proclaimed
"For me, so turn your blame aside, a heart displayed, laid open,
is its allegiance to love's creed, O you.
In passion's doctrine, O you who parade it."

"And the beloved of Imam al-Husayn follows it,
for the face is a covenant binding on us, which he does not cast off.
Our pact upon us in a face no turning aside can shake off."
