He defied the reprovers when his reprovers persisted,

And kept company with sorrow over one who would not keep his.

And the lover's night grew long in contemplation

Of one who had begun to put him off over his promise.

And he was open-handed, generous in offering him union,

Even if love's miser one day withheld that bond.

God bless those days of ours gone by,

While Time was heedless of us and we outwitted it.

While Time was heedless of us, sweet to us was

The life of youth; the sweetest life is the carefree one.

And our cup's fragrant draught was like a waft of musk,

A young gazelle with sweet manners passed it round.

He served the drinking companions wine from his glances,

From the enchantment of a gaze whose Babel had clothed it in magic.

He sways like a graceful garden bough; now

Every discerning man likens him to his peer—

Abu al-Ala, whose palm is exalted,

For no creature rivals him in glory.

And one who has clouds from the rain of his palm,

His downpours showering bounty upon mankind.

So, O Ata Allah, O son of the noblest, and one

Whose description establishes the proofs of his eminence:

You are he whose palm, with generosity, has flooded

All mankind, and whose bounty has encompassed all creation.
