شَقيتI suffered بِماbecause of what جَمعتI amassed فَلَيتَso, if only شِعريmy knowledge
وَرائيafter me مَنwho يَكونwill be بِهِthrough it سَعيداhappy
I suffered because of what I amassed—if only I knew
I regret what I have amassed, I wonder
who after me will find happiness in it.
Who after me will be made happy by it
أَعاينI behold حَسرَةًwith anguish أَهليmy family وَماليand my wealth
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle النَفسthe soul جاوَزَتpassed beyond الوَريداthe jugular vein
I behold my family and my wealth with anguish
I watch with regret my family and wealth
when the soul passes beyond the jugular vein.
When the soul has passed beyond the veins
أُعِدُّI prepare الزادَthe provisions مِنfrom تَقوىًpiety فَإِنّيfor indeed I
رَأَيتُI saw المَنِيَّةdeath السفرthe journey البَعيداthe long
I prepare provisions of piety, for I
I prepare provisions of piety, for I
have seen death as a long journey.
Have seen that death is a far journey
تَبَرّأَdissociated himself صاحِبيَmy companion فيin اللَحدِthe burial niche مِنّيfrom me
وَهالَand he heaped عَلىupon مَناكِبيmy shoulders الصَعيداthe earth
My companion forsook me in the grave's niche,
My friend disassociated himself from me in the grave
and heaped earth upon my shoulders.
And the soil was heaped upon my shoulders
وَوَدَّعَنيand he bade me farewell وَعَزَّand it was painful عَلَيهِfor him أَنّيthat I
أُوَدِعَهُI bid him farewell وَداعاًa farewell لَنwill not أَعوداI return
And he bade me farewell, and it pained him that I
He bade me farewell and it pained him that I
was bidding him farewell, never to return.
Entrusted him with a farewell not to return
فَلَوso if أَبصَرتَنيyou saw me مِنfrom بَعدِafter عَشرٍten
رَأَيتyou would see مَحاسِنيmy beautiful features قَدalready صُرنَthey had become دوداworms
So, if you saw me after ten had passed,
So if after ten years you were to see me
you would see my fair features already turned to worms.
You would find my beauty has turned to worms
لِعَبدِكَfor Your servant حينَwhen تَترُكَهُYou leave him وَحيداalone
Alone, solitary—O Lord, grant pardon
Alone and single, O Lord, forgive
to Your servant when You leave him alone.
Your servant when you leave him alone
