The motley group vanished at dawn
The dwelling brings companions near and sends them far away.
And the abode aided the motley and dismissed

They attacked you with youthful ardor
Thirst is quenched, but that anguish's heat will not cool.
The fever cooled but its heat does not cool

My soul and I said to them, “Do not go too far!”

And the next morning, after they endured
From Dhu al-Abariq by a croaking raven that strutted about.
From the lightning-like one, a ragged, torn cloak

He sends their foremost attackers flying, just as
And he went early morning parting with his hands
A file scatters shavings from iron's cutting edge.
The flanks of the hill, dividing its middle with his hand
تَترىone after another وَيَخصِفُهاand stitches them بِحَرفَيwith both edges رَوقِهِof his horn

شَزراًsideways كَماas اِختَصَفَstitched النِقالَthe sandals المِسرَدُthe awl
They come in succession; he stitches them with both edges of his horn,
Pecking at the shameful parts of the hips of she-camels
Sideways, as an awl stitches sandals.
And penetrating their lower parts, persistently wagging
فَصَدَدنَso they turned away عَنهُfrom him وَقَدand already عَصَفنَhad savaged بِنَعجَةٍa wild cow

They turned away from him, having brought down a wild cow
So the people abandoned them, aversion among them
That had left the herd, kept apart by a solitary calf.
A wanderer who fears and a fleer who escapes
فَالقَومُand the men أَجنُبَهاat her sides شَرائِجُof many sorts مِنهُمُamong them

The men at her sides were of many sorts; among them
A cook fed the fire and a nimble butcher roasted.
And he went on splitting its midsts by the palms

He went on, his forelegs splitting the hearts of the hills,
Like the share of war, directing its center the hand
As a hand splits the middle of a fi'al mound.
So they turned away from him, and they were parted by a ewe

He follows the thickets from the broad valley of Awarid,
Abandoned, singled out by a solitary barking voice
And wades below them through tall, swaying lavender.
By that I foresee worries when darkness falls
فَبِذاكَso with that أَطَّلِعُI surmount الهُمومَcares إِذاwhen دَجَتthicken with darkness

With such a mount I overcome cares, when there thicken
Its sides recede and are bound
Darknesses whose rear openings are unfastened and barred.
Umaymah said, while worries count me

وِردَlike approaching water الحَوائِمِthirsty circling camels سُدَّwas blocked عَنهاfrom them المَورِدُthe watering-place
Umama said, while cares kept visiting me
Among the driven beasts – the watering place is blocked to them
Like thirsty camels approaching a watering-place denied them:
The prince told of your need, and it extended him
أَنَباhas spurned بِحاجَتِكَyour request الأَميرُthe emir وَمَدَّهُand aided him

'Has the emir rejected your request, with men aiding him
Among those people stubbornly resisting until exhausted
In this—spiteful men who did their utmost?
So fling yourself into the lands, for it is only

Then cast yourself across the lands, for only
The prolonged who fulfills and shortens his worries
The stay-at-home cuts off and curtails his ambition.
And the brother of worries, when worries are prepared

The man beset by cares, when those cares gather
The wings of darkness, its pillow cannot rest
At his pillow in the dark of night, does not sleep.'
So I wore the fine garments of war for it

So I donned the garments of renewed war,
And kindled the fire of war, and it blazed
And kindled war's fire, so that it blazed.
They were confounded by fear of it upon their fires

For fear of it, they urinated on their own fires,
And surrendered after defiance and extinguished
And surrendered after grave danger, quenching their fires.
And accepted what they had hated the first time

They accepted what they had disliked the first time,
And saw the way to the path of the intimidator
And he who had threatened recognized his path.
And hoped for my reconciliation, and was certain that I

He hoped for a truce with me and became certain that I
Am the maker with my hands of what is seared
Was skilled with both hands where the stiff-necked is cauterized.
And guessed the extent of my purpose, so fell short of it
وَرَمىand shot مَدىthe range غَرَضيof my target فَقَصَّرَso he fell short دونَهُbefore it

He shot for the range of my target, but fell short of it;
Alas! The farther extent of sublime bounty from you
Far beyond you lies the noble men's utmost reach!
