O dwelling, deserted after your bands of people departed

for a year—and what about that year makes you weep?

Is it anything but a dwelling whose wind came early,

racing through its tossing ramram plants?

Within it young children have a playground,

    as though the footprints there

or speak clearly after its speechlessness.

its water through the rents along its seams.

and entered Najd after being in Tihamah,

were their clusters before full ripening.

watched by the eyes of their date-harvesters.

My young she-camel now, after being left untended

to live on dhubl without water and graze freely,

Toward you, O son of the noble sire, I traverse on her

    unknown country beyond its landmarks,

until she folded like a young man's cloak

and exchanged her rest for leanness.

rationed out for fear of impoverishment,
