أَبا خالِدٍ تَجتَ السُيوفِ البَوارِقِ
May God curse the men who abandoned him on the day of Bābil—
May God curse the men who, on the day of Babylon, abandoned
Abū Khālid, beneath the flashing swords.
Abu Khalid beneath the flashing swords.

A young warrior who, facing death, was nobler than they,
A young man who, facing death, was nobler than they
more steadfast in guarding honor, and more generous to fleet steeds;
In guarding honor, and more generous with fleet steeds;

سَقىmay water اللَهُGod جَزلَlavish السَيبِbounty عَفَّpure الخَلائِقِcharacter traits
سَقى اللَهُ جَزلَ السَيبِ عَفَّ الخَلائِقِ
So one woman mourns Yazīd, while a man says:
So a woman laments Yazid, and a man says:
“May God send rain upon that man, abundant in generosity and pure in character.”
“May God water the lavish giver, pure of character.”

When the death-herald proclaimed Yazīd dead, the earth
So when the herald announced Yazid’s death, there quaked
beneath us convulsed and shuddered like thunderbolts.
Beneath us the earth, and it shuddered as though with thunderbolts.

After his death, may no Azdī woman ever bear
So may no woman of Azd, after his death, carry
a fetus, nor hope for the bounty of rain-laden clouds.
A child, nor may they hope for the bounty of rain-laden clouds.
