I am told that Tamim seeks war with Tayy.

Blessed are You, O Lord of the ancient generations!

Taym and its Zayd Manat were not created,

nor Dabba, until after the tribes were made.

Mere hocks, bound together by abasement and baseness,

as a crouching defecator's body draws itself in.

They have black-faced men, and women

    ugly above and spindle-shanked below.

In the days of ‘Ad, Tayy imposed humiliation

on Tamim, and fought every jinn and maddening spirit.

They subdue them, taking their mothers captive,

and keeping the wives' anklets out of their reach.

When the two mountains shoulder the debt of a company

of men, that debt becomes nothing but empty dreams.

But no debt owed to a man of Tayy has its payment delayed,

when Tayy casts away the sheaths of its blades.

And whoever seeks from Tayy vengeance for a wrong done him

will find it as far as the Pleiades from an outstretched hand.

If they killed by surprise two men each a match for Tamim—

Ihaba and Ibn al-Jawn, on the day of al-Ajawil—

then we left the two sons of Shihab ibn Ja‘far,

and Janna’a, lying dead on the desert plain of ‘Aqil.

The broad-winged vulture feeds on him at dusk, after

a Balqa‘i point's two barbs and a lance's upper shaft had pierced him—

long and slender, red at both bare ends, driven hard

into him, while the lances' lower ends lay flat.

And the smiths of the clan of Darim threaten me,

and every base and obscure man of Ma‘add,

so that we may exalt among them what God refused to exalt,

and they have already trodden upon me with a ponderous tread.

Indeed, it has increased my love for myself that I am

    hated by every worthless man.

Whenever he sees me, he cuts off eye contact between himself

and me, like one who knows but feigns ignorance.

I fill the earth for him, until it seems

in his eyes as cramped as a trapper's snare.

And that I am plagued by the base; you never see

anyone plagued by them but a man of noble character.

So take me on: I am the man you know; avert

your gaze from the side of a man who offers no friendship.

Whenever his enemies see him, they exchange signals

in fear, all of them pointing with their fingers.

Is every man who finds his father wanting

hostile to the foremost men of noble deeds?

When his father's endeavors are mentioned, he feels shame,

yet feels no shame in reviling men of virtue.

Ours is the mightiest arm over men, and tribute

levied on every barefoot and shod man of Ma‘add,

since the days of Dhu al-Qarnayn, until there came in succession

along Islam's path the proud princes.

Were it not for Quraysh and the rights they have

over us, we would straighten every wayward man's crookedness,

and rule Ma‘add, just as Tubba‘ once

ruled them in all things, right or wrong.

We have a stronghold whose heart abasement has never entered,

when peoples speak of the might of strongholds.

No home was ever defended, nor its people made mighty

among men, except with lances and cavalry squadrons.
