وَلَوand if أَنَّthat غَيرَanyone other than المَوتِdeath لاmet (first part of لاقى) قىmet (second part of لاقى) عَدَبَّساًʿAdabbas
وَجَدِّكَand by your good fortune لَمnot يَسطِعbe able لَهُagainst him أَبَداًever هَضماsubjugation
Had anyone but Death encountered ʿAdabbas,
by your good fortune, he could never have brought him low.
فَتىًa young man لَمnot يَكُنbe فَقرٌpoverty يَضعضِعُweaken مَتنَهُhis back
وَيُبديand reveal الغِنىwealth مِنهُin him لَناto us خُلُقاًa disposition ضَخماoverbearing
A young man whose back poverty could not bend,
nor did wealth reveal to us an overbearing nature in him.
فَتىًa young man لَوif يُصاغُwere fashioned المَوتُdeath صيغَit would be fashioned كَمِثلِهِin his likeness
إِذاwhen الخَيلُthe horses جالَتwheeled فيin مَساحِلِهاtheir bridle-bits قُدماboldly forward
A young man—were Death given form, it would be fashioned in his likeness,
when the horses wheeled headlong against their bits.
وَلَوand if أَنَّthat مَوتاًdeath كانَhad سالَمَmade peace رَهبَةًout of fear
مِنَamong الناسِpeople إِنساناًa human being لَكانَthen it would have been لَهُtoward him سَلماat peace
And had Death ever made peace out of fear
with any man among men, it would have been at peace with him.
