فَلَوso if كانَwere يَبكيto weep القَبرُthe grave مِنbecause of لُؤمِthe baseness of حَشوِهِits contents
بِكَتwould weep مِنbecause of تَميمٍTamim كُلَّevery يَومٍday قُبورُهاits graves
So if a grave could weep at the baseness of its contents,
because of Tamim, its graves would weep every day.
أَلَيسَتwas it not تَميمٌTamim يَومَon the day of قَتلِthe killing of عَدِيِّهاits Adi
تَحَيَّرَwas bewildered أَعماهاits blind man وَتاهَand went astray بَصيرُهاits sighted man
Was it not Tamim, on the day its Adi was slain,
whose blind man was bewildered and whose sighted man went astray?
وَدانَتand submitted تَميمٌTamim لِلعَتيكِto al-Atik وَاِسلَمَتand surrendered
تَميمُTamim وَأَودىand perished خَطرُهاits prestige وَزَئيرُهاand its roar
And Tamim submitted to al-Atik and surrendered;
and Tamim's prestige and its roar were gone.
فَتَلقىso you find تَميماًTamim شَيخَهاits elder عِندَat بابِهِhis door
ذَليلاًabased وَيُغذىand is fed بِالهَوانِon humiliation صَغيرُهاits young one
So you find Tamim's elder at his door,
abased, and its young fed on humiliation.
تَميمُTamim تَمَنّىwishes for الحَربَwar ماas long as لَمnot تُلاقِهاfaces it
وَهُمand they قُصُفُbrittle العيدانِthe sticks فيin الحَربِwar خورُهاits weaklings
Tamim wishes for war as long as it has not faced it;
yet in war they are brittle sticks, its weaklings.
أَلَستُمare you not بِنيsons of الحَربِwar العَوانِoft-renewed زَعَمتُمُyou claimed
وَمِنand from غَيرِكُمothers than you فَتيانُهاits young warriors وَصُقورُهاand its falcons
Are you not sons of oft-renewed war, as you claimed?
Yet its young warriors and its falcons are not of your number.
فَهَلاَّwhy then did you not مَنَعتُمyou protected جارَكُمyour neighbor وَأَميرَكُمand your commander
بِأَسيافِكُمwith your swords وَالخَيلُwhile the horses تَدمىbleed نُحورُهاtheir breasts
Why, then, did you not protect your neighbor and your commander
with your swords, while the horses' breasts were bleeding?

And when it saw Iraq's Bakr ibn Wa'il
and the Azd of Oman, its close companion was lost to it.

It hoped to gain fair terms through peace, after
the millstone of oft-renewed war had been set spinning by its master.

Yazid set out in the morning amid a flashing cloud;
the east wind milked it, and its west wind bade it fall silent.
