And I shall surely lead my steed and hurl

It and myself this year into one of the distant, perilous places,

To gain wealth, or attain freedom from need

From God, shielding me from the aggressors among the caliphs,

For fear that a shabby worldly life should lead me astray,

As the doomed, wayward man strayed within it.

So, O my Lord, if my death comes, let it not be

On a bier heaped high with dark, bordered cloaks.

But bring on my day in martyrdom, together with a band

Who are slain in a perilous pass in the land:

Bands of diverse origins, brought together by

God's guidance, warriors at the battle stations.

When they leave their earthly life, they leave suffering,

And pass to what is promised in the scriptures.

So let me be slain by a crushing blow, then let my bones be flung

    Like a bundle of fresh grass amid stormy winds;

And let my grave be the belly of a vulture whose noonday resting place

Is in the sky's expanse among circling vultures.
