And I shall surely lead my steed and hurl
And I am a rider urging my steed, hurling
It and myself this year into one of the distant, perilous places,
Myself and my soul into perils this year,

To gain wealth, or attain freedom from need
That I may gain wealth or attain riches
From God, shielding me from the aggressors among the caliphs,
From God who suffices me against the vice regents.
مَخافَةَfor fear of دُنياworldly life رَثَّةٍshabby أَنthat تُميلَنيit may lead me astray
كَماas مالَstrayed فيهاin it الهالِكُthe doomed one المُتَجانِفِthe wayward one
For fear that a shabby worldly life should lead me astray,
Lest the base world with its trifles seduce me
As the doomed, wayward man strayed within it.
As it seduced the doomed and the defiant one.
فَيارَبِّso, O my Lord إِنif حانَتcomes due وَفاتيmy death فَلاthen not تَكُنbe

So, O my Lord, if my death comes, let it not be
So my Lord, when my death hour arrives, let there be
On a bier heaped high with dark, bordered cloaks.
No steed with outfit aloft to bear my coffin.
وَلَكِنbut أَحِنbring to its appointed time يَوميmy day شَهيداًas a martyr وَعُقبَةًand a band

But bring on my day in martyrdom, together with a band
But let me die a martyr and hero, and a terror
Who are slain in a perilous pass in the land:
To them in a valley of the land which terrifies.

Bands of diverse origins, brought together by
Bands of diverse men made one by the guidance of God,
God's guidance, warriors at the battle stations.
Descending at places of pause and waiting.
إِذاwhen فارَقواthey leave دُنياهُمُtheir worldly life فارَقواthey leave الأَذىsuffering
وَصارواand they pass إِلىto مَوعودِwhat is promised ماwhat فيin المَصاحِفِthe scriptures
When they leave their earthly life, they leave suffering,
When they leave their world, they leave harm too
And pass to what is promised in the scriptures.
And attain the promise made in the Scriptures.
فَأُقتَلَso I may be slain قَصعاًby a crushing blow ثُمَّthen يُرمىare flung بِأَعظُميmy bones

كَضِغثِlike a bundle الخَلىfresh grass بَينَamid الرِياحِthe winds العَواصِفِstormy
So let me be slain by a crushing blow, then let my bones be flung
Then let me die a victim and let my bosom be thrown by
Like a bundle of fresh grass amid stormy winds;
The winds into a desolate place amid storms.
وَيُصبِحَand may become قَبريmy grave بَطنَthe belly of نَسرٍa vulture مَقيلُهُits noonday resting place

And let my grave be the belly of a vulture whose noonday resting place
And let my grave be the belly of an eagle
Is in the sky's expanse among circling vultures.
Whose abode is the air, in a pairing eagle.
