Truly the heart belongs to the departing, singing one,

When it trailed behind the mature, bashful maidens.

The pale camels stepped briskly, while it followed them,

Walking in infatuation like an aged she-camel in the camel pen.

The tribe united in departure, and off with them went

A traveler who saw the folly of following as right guidance,

A possessed man, born of the jinn—or struck

Within by devils, full of rancor and envy.

Their litters swayed when there rose about them

The forenoon mirage, buoyant at the summons of merriment.

I kept following them with an eye whose tear ducts

Seemed inflamed, though no inflammation afflicted the eye.

Until the eye's sight dimmed, and there welled up

From its corners tears of burning grief.

O Tayy of the plains and mountains, meeting you

Is like seeking prey in a lion's lair.

And the lion—whoever seeks prey in its precincts

Has his soul borne upward from the body's safest recess.

Tamim cried out, shamed by its own faults,

Carried from one distant land to another.

Of the smith, in his old age, nothing remained

Except as much as the passing days left of Lubad.

May no man's victory bring him honor if he has a horse

Against Tamim, yet seeks help from anyone.

When he raises Azd's battle cry, he scatters them,

    As a lion's roar scatters short-legged sheep.

If Tamim's time to drink came, and it were told:

"Azd are at the Messenger's pool," it would not drink.

Or if God sent revelation that He would punish it

Unless it returned to fight Azd, it would not return.

And that is because Tamim left as surrendered booty

For Azd every budding-breasted maiden with soft, matted hair,

Like a white oryx when her saffron-dyed garments were stripped:

They took her without bride-price or toil.

It left its protected women exposed to Azd,

And did not stop for wealth or offspring.

Never trust a Tamimi with a body

Already dead, so long as its bones have not come apart.

Let the smith not think disgrace can be washed away

From his people by his writhing in lies and folly.

And if the smith encounters hardship in his days,

His plight casts him onto an unyielding mountain slope,

Like certain events in the days of our forefathers

That Banu al-Sid met from us on the night of Sanad.

And Darim—we hurled a hundred of them

Into blazing fire, as they leapt in the trenches.

They leapt in its roasting place, and it was kindled

By Amr—and without those men's fat it would not burn.

So ask Zurarah and al-Ma'mum what became

Of Uwarah's slain, from Zaghwan and al-Kadad,

As the two trotted through the army, tightly fastened

Were the halters of their captivity, in stout leather thongs.

I refused to let Dabbah lampoon me to make me lampoon it.

Bah to Dabbah as an ally and a supporting arm!

O Dabbah, if you deny the days of our favors,

You have denied the gifts of ancestral blessings.

The two days of Uwarah are among the days of our favors,

And Salma's day was a favor, O Dabbah, after another favor.

And time destroys the root of every baseness,

But Dabbah's baseness has neither lessened nor perished.

If any hidden thing could escape the All-Merciful

Among His creatures, Banu Asad would escape His notice.

The Asadi's food never benefits him

In himself, nor gives him merit over anyone.

A people whose forefathers settled in the abode of humiliation,

As a stake's broken stump stays fixed there.

It showed Azd its scandals and offered excuses

After its disgrace, with slander and folly.

Every tribe, as they know, has over al-Ja'ra'

Some merit; you have no merit over anyone.

And ask Qufayrah at al-Marrut whether she witnessed

Al-Hutay'ah's dash between the tent-side and stacked furnishings.

Or was there poetry in Ghalib, that it might be matched

By his son's verse, letting him reach poetry from close at hand?

She brought him forth as a seed-drop of the vilest stagnant water,

Driven into the vilest valley cleft in any land.

What is Tamim talking about, O son of their smith,

When I have spoken truth, and nothing out of folly?

Whoever assails Tayy one day, when there surge

Its supporting hosts, finds rough going even on level ground.

Qahtan was carved out for Kahlan's kings, just as

The tribes were carved from Kahlan through Udad.

A people whose is the earth's west after its east,

When earth's peoples vie for height amid hardship.

Whoever voices the pilgrim's call, they meet him in Mina's valley,

A flood of pebbles from Yemen's far-off passes.

With Tamim you seek to rival them—Tamim was not created

Until ancestral honor and numbers had already been apportioned.

Were it not for Quraysh and its right in the Book,

And that obeying them leads to right guidance,

We would have subdued Tamim, as our forefathers

Subdued their forefathers in ages long past.
