a tent-trench like a stone trough, hostage to crumbling,

and mottled ashes yielded by a markh branch,

among hearthstones in a newly dug patch,

A dwelling that once was ours,

broken in a dug-out hollow or burrow!

How dear the visitor, of whom nothing is seen

but a fleeting glimpse, at rare intervals,

driven hard by a hideous source of terror,

nursing a fawn, bending tenderly toward the drowsy one

before her, the color of Tihami white hide,

or like the soft tips of nasi grass, not yet

thick-stemmed in a sheltered sandy hollow,

a faint sound, though the source of fear sleeps,

watchful, while the herd around her

shelters in shade at the roots of salam acacias.

They closed, before their placental sacs,

    rings locked after barrenness.

They are smooth as hard date-stones,

    in hollows she dug, as

people dig wells that yield nothing.

Then she left like a shooting arrow, without

quenching the raging heat of thirst.

in Qiran, between the two cliffs of Hawam.

It endured the summer with dripping water

that eroded its bank when the deep water overflowed.

Patches of its water rose over the bank,

from a sandhill, like twisted threads of fine rain.

    Then it became spring-fed,

by a slow seep from depleted desert sources,

as there crept toward a cistern,

    closely stone-paved, the springs of underground channels;

or like water in clustered pools that filled

a great bucket, in the hands of those watering thirst-sick camels.

She is carried toward it by a strong, swift gait,

    restless, though not roused by mating heat;

and a resolute stallion, his run headlong,

seeking the evening draught before darkness,

has driven her there, and she is aflame,

above her, something like the flare of burning fuel.

She met a gaunt hunter, long unfed,

keen of eye and little given to weariness,

licking his arrow-bindings; he had a bow,

long-backed, loudly twanging at its string,

    crouched in a level hunting-hide,

as a falcon folds itself among stones.

If he takes game, most of it goes

    to stunted little ones whose sustenance is meat;

or, if he encounters failure, he supplies them

with old, dry doum-fruit instead of a meal.

He shot at her, confident that he

was a hunter, if granted game, a marksman.

But he let the arrow slip past her, as

the pulley-frame slips with the water-drawer.

She went on easily, sending pebbles flying

with sound hoof-frogs and hard hoof-rims.

The nose-thongs wore away against it, as

    hurled missiles wear down stone.
