    O sleeper in the cradle

of my songs and my melody,

    Thus my authority prevails,

    and my sorrow enthralls you.

    Thus into your eyes descends

    what my eye sends forth.

You, O giver of my melodies—

and my art hopes for them—

you made the melody gush for me,

so I shaded you with my peace.

I fashion only from your generosity

    my wine and my wine-jar.

The spell of your eyes lies only

in what you enchant in me.

O my hopes, which I worship

    in every hue,

and my songs, which were inspired

    by a jinn inspirer,

    and which the poet melted

    into the sweetly nasal voice—

whenever the lute takes flight with them

    and the singer fashions them,

    ين مدو وَمَرن

    they flutter with two wings,

    resounding and ringing;

    they pass through every heart

    and envelop every ear.

    Thus, O drowsy one, flows

    my beauty into your beauty.

And thus my authority is enforced,

    and my sorrow enthralls you.
