    لَو صَبَ فيهِ الزَمان لابتلعه

    In the night is depth, and in the darkness a tunnel;

if time were poured into it, it would swallow it.

    If thunder tore anyone's ears,

in the depths of that darkness, he would not hear it.

If dawn, with all its breadth, were poured into

the smallest vessel in its keeping, it would hold it.

Its stars remain within its breast,

drowned, and the mother of stars lies reclining.

Life loses its world within it,

as a stranger loses his springtime abode.

And the vast world withdraws into

an impregnable corner, indistinguishable in its presence.

It erases whatever trace existence has—

its place in time—or has let it vanish.

And it effaces ugliness and beauty: there is no

meaning in the universe that it has not stripped away.

Where it has draped sackcloth, you would think

it had frayed life's cord and severed it.

Life passed over it, crossing it

in a boat whose maker I know.

Until, when it rode upon its surging waves,

the swelling surge overwhelmed it and swallowed it.

And there was an age, and epochs were stricken,

while ignorance goaded its beast of prey upon the earth.

Its armored defender repels the arrow of light,

and shelters in caves lest it be restrained.

Until light overflowed, and there burst forth

a spring of light that scattered its heresies.

So today the vessel of morning is not hard to board,

nor are the sky's stairways inaccessible.

A light from knowledge: along its ascending paths

we strive, and knowledge has ample scope in existence.
