In my faith and my belief in God's oneness, I would not prefer

the mirage's deceptions to my provisions and my watering place.

They beguiled me; enough for me that my waterskin,

full, was spilled despite my thirst in the wastelands.

I emptied it, and against my will it flowed down,

white as the soul, into black, unyielding rock.

And I went away, not drawing from my water

a drink, nor was it favored with my provisions.

I doubt; my doubt pains me, and I search for

the coolness of certainty, only to exhaust my effort pursuing it.

I doubt, not willingly, and it kills me—

my doubt; and my stem withers from its whisperings.

And how often I seek refuge in Him in whom all creation sought refuge,

and seek shade in a waterless, trackless wilderness.

God defend me and the edifice of faith from doubts

crazed in thought, that have risen around the One I worship.

If they have beguiled me in my worship, how often have they led

me into perils in my faith and my belief in God's oneness.
