Who will protect humankind from me?

My pen is my sword, and my page my shield.

Humankind is doomed when I reach maturity, while

my art still has youth's first freshness.

Events drank from my blood, and

my reed pen drank its fill of what my wine-jar pours.

I burned with love and passionate longings,

and set my melody ablaze upon the lutes.

Beauty knows the passion I endure,

and longing never runs dry in me.

And beloved beauty knows how often I have kindled

my thoughts with grief and kept my eyelids wakeful.

Woe to humankind from my weeping heart,

and woe to me for what injustice brings.

Life mustered her troops and hurled

into it every adversary who terrifies the strong.

This is life's revolt: who will stand for the universe,

    protecting it from reckless missiles?

This is youth's revolt: I have found nothing like youth

for parched pastures, nor anything dearer to my eyes than childhood.

Clay rejoices in my hand, and I play,

earnestly tearing life down and building it.

How often I build pebbles into palaces, and how I exalt

their worth and esteem my own!

My homeland in childhood is dolls and statues,

myself, those I love, and my close companion.

Ask this child, “What will satisfy

you, if not the playthings of jinn?”

“These, Father, are images that never

leave my world or depart my universe.

Reeds fashion my lute, and sand builds

my throne, while play awakens my peace.

    بِيَدي صُغتَها وَذيالَك اِبني

    That is my bride, and she is my own handiwork;

with my own hand I fashioned her, and that little one is my son.”

It is the child's world, not the old man's paradise,

overflowing with bliss of every hue.

O my reed pen, which went on creating magic

for so long, and which song delights,

and which sets life dancing and gives itself over

to the illusion of love and wishful dreams:

every eye that holds a magical fountain

of love has closed, indebted to you.

All in life, whether a woman with two breasts

or a sweetly nasal-voiced one in two gauzy tunics—

you reveal its beauty through what you harvest

and gather from the vine of eloquence.

Stand with us: let us fill the land with fervor

and bring down its ponderous pillar.

She is a fount of bounty for newcomers,

but a source of stinginess for her own people.

    Foreigners draw bounty from her,

and boundless wealth, with no reproach.

Our country made them insolent; haughty grew the son

of Athens, and the Armenian grew arrogant.

O my country, I have wished you good in all sincerity, and

sought to keep my love for you free of every lie.

O my country, you are narrower than my livelihood

in scope, and smaller than my earholes.

My heart has grief enough in what I endure,

my sides filled with exhaustion and weariness.

And enough for me is need, the want that drives

my soul toward parting and separation.
