It is you I love, and you are my slayer, who

Broke faith; a visit from you has grown rare.

Yesterday the doves sang between us

Love’s melody, and the birds sang for us.

And love’s waters flowed between us.

And today your desertion roams with wasting pain.

You are the gardens of Eden when we meet,

And your distance is hellfire’s blaze when you hasten away.

And indeed imagination brings you near, so I turn

To embrace it—and behold, a passing phantom.

And behold, it is you, at the hour we were drawn together

Beneath the leafy groves by fate.

And memory brings you back; there is no lover

To whom remembrance does not bequeath wasting pain.

If your magic lurks within your eyelids,

Then its torrential torment has drenched others.

And others have died of it, and others burn

In its blaze; for all but you, there is burning heat.

This is my heart; look into its core—

The scars meet your eye before you reach it.

Glory be to You, O God! How many an eye

In which enchantment has a dwelling and a resting place!

Glory be to You, O God! How many a cheek

Your radiance streams over, and it is illumined!

It outshines the roses of the hills, as though

Flowers had sprung upon it through Your planting.
