بِكَwith you الطَريقthe road الَّذيwhich سَلكتهyou traveled it
O procession of light, where did it lead you—
Where did the procession of light end?
the road that you traveled?
On the path you took with you,
وَذَلِكَand that القُدسholiness مُذsince تَقضىpassed away
تَراكdo you think? فيin جَدولa stream سَكبتهyou poured it
And that holiness, since it passed away—
And that sanctuary since you fulfilled
do you think, in a stream you poured,
I see you in the stream it poured.

it slept in its lap and closed its eyes,
Did I sleep in its lap and nap?
or turned toward its home along the way?
Or did you take shelter in a house on the way?
ياO رقةtenderness فيin الثَرىthe earth تَذوبmelts
وَنَضرةand freshness لِلرَدىfor death تَنشرis spread out
O tenderness melting into the earth,
O gentleness in the earth melting away
and freshness laid open to death,
And freshness spreading for the meadows
وَفتنةand enchantment هاbehold هُناhere تَغيبvanishes
وَعالِماًand a world مِنof الهَوىlove تَكسرshattered
and enchantment vanishing here,
And here disappearing temptation
and a world of love shattered.
And a scholar of passion breaking
أَأَنتare you? عُوفيتyou were spared ياO جُيوبgarment-bosoms
دذاكunclear; perhaps 'that' قَبرgrave الحَبيبthe beloved يَكسرshatters
Have you been spared, O garment-bosoms?
Have you been granted relief, oh bosoms?
That [unclear reading] grave of the beloved shatters;
For that is the grave of the beloved breaking

And all its pebbles are hearts
surging around it and swelling.
Surging around it and humming

Here the beauty of life is folded away;
And here a bowl and cups
here the eyes of love sleep.
His spears hit their mark and seared

Here Fate's arrows are drunk;
So he hurried the drinking and the wine
and here, behold, a bowl and a goblet [unclear reading].
And here his cup is satiated
أَصابَhit the mark رِماحهhis spears وَأَشوىand missed the vital spot

His spears struck and missed the vital spot;
The earth drinks from it and the gravel
so drinking and wine were cut short.
Oh anguish filling the deserts

And this is his cup, quenching thirst
And a charm crowding the graves
with its wine for the earth and heaps of stones.
How did you make the bare plains your home?
ياO لَوعةanguish تَملأfills الصَحارىthe deserts
وَطَلسماand a talisman يَزحمcrowds القُبوراthe graves
O anguish filling the deserts,
And not feel safe in palaces?
and a talisman crowding the graves!
And how did you make it your home?

وَلَمand did not تَكُنyou were تَأمَنyou felt safe in القُصوراthe palaces
How did you take the open wilderness as a home,
And how did you barricade it with rocks?
when you did not feel safe in palaces?
You used to summon the chaste maidens
وَكَيفَand how أَقطَعتهاyou allotted it دِياراdwellings
وَكَيفَand how وَسَدتهاyou pillowed it with صُخوراrocks
And how did you allot it dwellings,
To strew flowers around you
and how did you make rocks its pillow,
وَكُنتand you used to تَستَنفرyou summon العَذارىthe maidens

when you used to summon the maidens
to scatter flowers around you?
