O Time, enough! You have prolonged my sobbing,

And left me in my homeland like a stranger.

And stripped me of joy's robe because of one who combined

The two qualities of a servant and a man of letters.

So my verse and tears are pearls,

Strung by the two natures of a lover and a man of letters.

Gone from my dwelling is a crescent that shone

On the horizon of my nurturing and my instruction.

So now he rises somewhere other than my home, and never

Does my heart cease to be hostage to sobbing over him.

A precious perfume wafts its fragrance in another's keeping,

And I see it as the work of my kneading and my blending.

And a precious necklace gleams in another's keeping,

And I see it as the work of my stringing and my arranging.
